Paper patching for the handi?
« on: January 04, 2013, 12:15:55 PM »
I was wondering who on here paper patches for their handis? I see alot of talk of paper jackets in the buffalo classics on other sites. For those that do shoot paper jackets with the BC, what is your accuracy at 100 yds and is your barrel as is from the factory? What is your boolit measurement and your patched ready to shoot patched boolit measurement?   Thanks,  .DT

We have our own PP forum down below... kinda slow.  There's a smokeless PP forum on 'cast boolits'.  'Nobade' shoots them in Handis.  Posts here and there.  Good info both places.  Just fyi...

Its a 'whole nuther critter' with subtleties and nuances that most dont want to deal with, but go for it if you want and tell us how its working out. I know Ive got more than enough experiments to do with grease groove cast bullets to keep me busy the rest of my life........ :P

Fun and easy in the .45/70. Just buy Speer SWC Swaged lead pistol bullets in .451/.452" diameter and paper patch them to about .458-.460". Seemed to shoot better with a 50/50 Vaseline/Beeswax lubricant. Bullet fully expanded in picture went through a nice 8pt whitetail.
Bullets at far left are the 250 gr Speer factory pistol bullet. Next is a 325 gr .452"bullet cast in pure [close to it]lead and wrapped for the .45/70 also. Last is a factory Hornady .357 pistol bullet patched, lubed, and sized back to .360" for .35 rounds [38Spl/358 Win, etc], I forget the weight.

Alan,

What are you using for the paper?  I treat a guy that has worked, in vain, to get paper patched bullets to work in his 38/55 and told him I would keep my eyes open for threads about the process.  As I understand it he has had problems with the bullet separating from the paper while still in the barrel and leaving out of the muzzle out of control so to speak.

Thanks in advance for your feedback.  buc

Alan,

Very interesting.  One question (for now):  What are the weights of those bullets in your picture?

Thanks,

Jparedes

Tell your friend to check out the thread I recently posted in the  paper patch room below. I got it to work very well.

A 'must read' is Paul Matthews book "The Paper Patched Bullet".

Thanks for the wights Alan.
For now I'm shooting grease lubed cast bullets made by Montana Bulletworks.  I have tried 300 gr and 350 gr but the best I have done is about 1 1/2" at 100 yrds.  Next will be a batch of the classical 405 gr and see how it goes.  Once I nail the best bullet weight for my rifle, I will start the process of converting to PP.
