New Remington 783
« on: January 04, 2013, 12:21:10 PM »
Have you guys seen the advertisement for this new 783 on Big Greens website yet.  Kinda looks like it might be another version of the 710, 770 line of rifle.  Looks like it has a savage trigger on it.

I can't see why anyone would buy one.  Mostly plastic junk like the Ruger American.

With the 710 and 770 series of rifles not "well received" by the shooting public, one would think that Remington would have a tough time cracking the market.
But....price sells guns, and when the "writers" act like they are the best thing since sliced bread to hit the market  (since last year when the Ruger American arrived) Remington will likely sell tons of them.
The real question is....will Remington be selling them in a few years after "real" shooters buy them and put some wear on them or will the 783 end up like the 710 and 770?
Like most things......time will tell.
BTW.....I wonder if Savage is tired of everyone putting an "accu-trigger look alike" on their rifles.....? :o

Wish theyd just re introduce the 788. Now that was the best Remington rifle. Maybe fit it with a staggered feed flush fit mag., that was the only complaint I ever had about that rifle.

 :o
I don't think that question will ever get answered, because I don't see how that rifle or its "budget bolt action" ilk would have any appeal at all to a "real shooter."
And here's why.....
The real expense of an avid shooting hobby isn't in the hardware.  It is found in the cost of the copper and / or lead that gets sent downrange through it, as well as other expenses associated with sending it down range, like range fees, license fees, transportation to and from shooting areas, and so on.  In other words, if you shoot a lot, it will cost you just as much over the long haul to shoot a Remington 700 CDL or 40XB as it will to shoot a Remington 783 in the same chambering.  There is no question in my mind as to which would prove more satisfactory in every respect to me.  I'd rather have a 700 CDL or something else from the upper market end of Remington's range than the lower end.
There are more gun owners in this country than avid shooters.  Owning a Remington 783 isn't all that expensive to do.  Shooting 200 rounds a month through it or more it a different matter.  Avid shooters who shoot frequently recognize that economic truth and that's why I have a hard time beliving that Remington 783's are manufactured or marketed with the serious shooter in mind.

i just watched the remington guys on youtube showing this model off. i'm not impressed. i will never understand why a company that makes a product like the model 700, 870, and 11/87 tries to have the newest thing. make what you make good and stick with it. i have been waiting all year for the remington 700 sps long range to hit the shelves and i found out last week that remington is not even going to produce this rifle. they claim that it is due to the stock manufacturer not being able to provide a quality product. well they have been producing the 700 sps varmint which has what appears to be the same stock on it for years now. i wish they would quit playing with the consumer and do what they say.

"only accurate rifles are interesting" so the saying goes...so I'm going to wait and see.  The way it looks may not be sweet, but I'm more interested in it's accuracy and durability.  I see them more as a tool...my two bits.

A new Model 700 can be had for $400.00.  If you want to pay more for a plastic POS that's up to you.

Big Green needs this rifle (at this price point) to compete with the Axis, American, XL/XS 7, etc, etc. Whether or not it's a good rifle remains to be seen but it'll probably sell well just because it's a Remington.

I'd like to know where you're shopping?  I haven't see a wood stock 700 for $400 (new) for some time.  Yes, around here you can get the 700ADL for roughly that...but it's a plastic stock only deal.

Remember the $451 is suggested retail. I'll wait to hold my judgement until I've at least handled one...and preferably shot one.

The 783 has a plastic stock and nearly all the rest of it is plastic too.  The Walmart 700ADL comes with a mounted scope and is 100 times the rifle.

Yea...I don't get the metal mag, bolt, and trigger and then a plastic barrel!?

No, seriously,  I'm not saying your in the night, the 700 is a great outfit (even the $450 walmart, plastic stock setup), I'm just going to hold my opinion on the 783 for now.  Have your hands touched a 783?

I guess Walmart charges more in your area.  Dick's Sporting Goods sells Model 700s for considerably less than $400.00.  A real rifle and not plastic junk.

I've got a Ruger American in 30-06. I haven't scoped it or shot it yet. All the reviews say it's a good shooter though. :-*
If I had the American and the 783 side by side I'd buy whichever one fit me best. If I had an ADL in the mix I'd buy the ADL hands down. I'm not sure why I bought the American now that I think of it. Spur of the moment I guess.

Spanky, the American is a shooter, partly because of the bedding system which trumps all the plastic stocks including the ADL syn. & the Hogue found on the SPS Tactical as well & because the American has a good barrel, something Ruger did not have in the past, just as the upper end 700's are shooters. I have shot several sub 1/2" groups with my American 308. I keep a heavy barrel Rem 308 as well for Target work. I had to sell my SPS Tact. 308 & get a 700 5R Mil Spec in order to outdo the Ruger. Just the way it is.

Nothing wrong with that!

The Ruger was 340.00, I had to pay more for my ADL's, but they are OK

Directly from the Remington web site

Bolt Action Model 783™  Accuracy to a whole new level on an entirely new bolt-action platform designed from the ground up by the engineering team. It's a tack-driving confluence of our legendary bolt-action heritage and today's most advanced precision-enhancing features.

"Accuracy to a whole new level..." Sounds like they are trying to improve their bolt accuracy. ".....Designed from the ground up by the engineering team." Looks like they copied the Savage rifle right down to the barrel nut, button rifled barrel, floating bolt head and accu-trigger. The safety looks 700ish.

If Acadamy Sports can sell Rem ADLs for under $400, what market glitch does the 783 fill.  Just resume making the ADLs.  I'd buy them any day.

I'm guessing this is to replace the 770 which was also more expensive than the 700 ADL.

They list them on their website for that price too.  It looks like a great deal if you can live with a dirt cheap plastic stock.

Their nearest store to me is about 1500 miles away or I'd drop in and take a look.
