41 cal barrel blank has arrived.
« on: January 04, 2013, 02:29:30 PM »
Blank came in today. 10 days, not too bad. I was a little anxious, as D Boone carried a 41 cal rifle. Looked good, a little rusty, bore shiny. 25/9.10" long. 1.110" round. Slugged the bore. 6 groves, 400 lands, 410 groves, that is good. Twist is 16-1/2, livable. I understand standard is 1 in 20. Beggers can't choosy. All parts on hand, stub barrel, ejector, blank and reciever fitted to stub. scout mount a 2x pistole scope. The question is? leave it at 26" or shorty at 20.

The 1:16-1/2 should let you stabilize slightly longer bullets than the handgun if you choose to also.  ;)

Pistol round shouldnt need all that much barrel to get a complete burn. Do a reasonable shorty and use the cut-off for a chamber insert project for a shotgun?

As you can see the 16 inch barrel in these tests peaked the velocity in most of the tested bullets. And yes the 15" gave a few more feet per second and 10 years if the feds measure the barrel  ;D
A 9" barrel insert in a shotgun barrel would not be a slouch either!
And a 16 " shorty is neat looking as well!
The only real reason for a longer barrel is if open sights are used (longer sight plane)
But when all is said and done its your firearm and only has to suit you!
Enjoy

Thanks for all the good info. No advantage for the long barrel and a shotgun insert sounds like a good project for the cutoff. 20" will be the goal. My 45LC is 20 and the 45ACP also. The planed scout mount would be better on a carbine. Project starts on the 11th of Jan at the deer camp.
