270 Handi Success 12/31/12
« on: January 04, 2013, 05:23:44 PM »
Next to last day of Hunting in Michigan, I finally was able to harvest a deer on my property. This is our extended doe season, and to change my luck up - I grabbed up my son's handi 270. Shot what looked like a doe at 150 yrds, to find out it was a spike (legal if under 3"). I couldn't believe how nice it picked up and sighted in so quickly. My buddy (in Gray) shot his doe with his CVA Wolf. Son and I might have a fight to see who takes the Handi or who is hunting w/ the Remmy 742 30.06 next year. My son, who is 16, has been successful with it for the last 3 years and its the only gun he knows. I have offered to buy him another gun (bolt, semi) so his younger brother can learn on the Handi but he has turned me down. What a nice way to party for New Years.

I'm picking one up in trade this afternoon and it won't be my first. My first 270 was all over the place. couldnt get it to shoot for nothing with any factory ammo. the one im getting today is a heavy barreled ultra, or so the gent says.

congratulations!   the .270 is no doubt a great round.  I don't own one in handi, but do have two .270's in other platforms.   Congrats again.

Nothing special about the gun. It was a $125 yard sale find set up with a pranghorn scope. Has been good to my son and this year to me - so its now special enough.  IDK if it is an ultra or heavy barrel or just a plain Jane - I do know that it has been on target to the boiler room now with both Core Lokts and reduced recoil rounds bought off the shelf for 4 years straight. Nothing fancy, it just works.
