Favorite .270 Coyote load?
« on: January 05, 2013, 03:43:10 AM »
Anyone have a favorite coyote load ( not a pelt saver, just a killer) for their .270 or know of someone's? I'm not after load data, just the bullet you/they used. Since the AWB talk, I only saw some Sierra 120 and Hornady 120 Spire pts at Sportswhse yesterday. I can always order something different, but would like opinions.
My BAR shoots the Remington 100 factory very well, and the Federal 110 TTSX extremely well, but I want to handload something. Any suggestions/experience with a .270 coyote buster load? Thanks.

RJ,

Great topic, love going after the wiley coyote. About 15 years ago, I had a Remington 700 Mountain Rifle LSS and I used it for coyote and deer hunting. I used the 90 gr Sierra varminter bullet for my coyote hunting. I dont recall the load off of the top of my head but I do believe I held it just below 3500fps and it sure ruined their day. This bullet was designed to be very explosive, and it is. So if you can find an accurate load give it a try, I think you will like the results.

Shoot the hottest listed load with almost any expanding bullet that shoots accurately in your gun.  Those fast bullets make a mess out of varmints ;D

Good luck,

I just worked up a deer/elk/hog load with the Hornady 150 IB, and may just use it for the practice. For sure it will buck the wind, but that 90gr Varminter sounds like it would be fun to use. I will have to get a box of them or similar and see what this old rifle will do. Thanks guys.

That is the bullet you want.  Dad has used that combo for many years.

I saw some Speer 100 HP Varminter bullets and some Hornady 100 SP bullets today. I don't want to order any via mail as (a) most places are out of Sierra 90s or Vmax 110, and (b) the ones that do have it charge about $9 for shipping. This BAR shoots the Barnes 110 TTSX into less than .75", this from the Federal factory load. I am leaning toward something in 110 just to match the trajectory, etc. Anyone use the Sierra 110 ProHunter or Hornady 110 Vmax?

I didn't shoot a lot of coyotes with a 270, mostly just those that were opportunistic on other hunts, or those called in after those hunts.   So the only 270 I ever shot coyotes with was my Ruger 77PL that I bought for deer/elk hunting in the mid 70's.   I used 130's for deer and 150's for elk, knew exactly what they each would do at various ranges to very long.    So in my case anyway I just shot what was in the rifle at the time.   After I stopped big game hunting the rifle was never used again for years.   I wanted to get some use out of it so I put a target trigger in it with the idea of using it sometimes for long range varmints and predators in windy conditions.   Was going to just use the 130's - they were plenty accurate at long ranges.   Far as it got though, I never took it out and it's still just a safe queen.

I hear you, any will kill a coyote, I'm just playing around, love to handload. I'm sure my long 150 Hornady IB will buck the wind, and out here in the High Desert, there are practically no humans or cattle/horses to worry about richochets. I do like to see "the Red Mist" when I can though, ha. When my Marine SIL came home from his 2nd tour of Iraq, I had bought him a 22-250 and we shot jackrabbits with it out of the warm p/u ( it was a cold February, and we were at a place we could do that) That 45gr bullet sure made the steam show up, ha. I gave him all my rifles but two, my .270 and my favorite, a .35 Whelen AI. So my 270 is my toy right now.

Well, I found some Sierra 90s at Wideners, online, for a tad over $22 a box, but after a $5 "small order fee" and $12.92 shipping, I changed my mind! So, I went back to Sportsman's Whse and got the Sierra 110 pro Hunters for $24. Since the Barnes 110 TTSX shot so well, I'll just measure their COL to ogive with a bullet Comparator and start my sierras there. I am going to use H4350 or Varget, depends on how much of which I have. I am also going to use a standard rifle primer, I have a bunch of CCI BR2 I like. Hopefully I'll get out to the range one day next week after the snow stops. I'll report how they did, thanks guys.

I think my 270 has a 1:10 barrel, so the 90/100/107 bullets probably wouldn't have shoot as well as the 130/150 bullets.

I've lived on the desert for over 22 years, not that cold here but a lot of my P&V ADC was far north of here at altitude up to 7000' + in the Great Basin where it could get cold nights even in summer and all the time in the winter months.    Since I was doing ADC for landowners on private land I too shot from the truck alot, especially on the all night hunts in the winter months spotlighting for jacks.

Sound advice. My rifle likes the bigger bullet for more accuracy.  I take many coyotes with 22-250 or 257 WBY, but on occasion I will take the 270 WSM  loaded with 150 gn Sierra Matchkings over Reloader 19.

The 150 gn match bullet will red mist a coyote very accurately, without throwing shrapnel at my cattle.

When I really want to explode a coyote into tiny bits of goo,  a 168 gn HPBT .308 Matchking over 82 gn of Retumbo from my 30/378 WBY  30" barrelled  Mark V Custom shop-built Deluxe  does the job nicely!  Can't do it all day long, but it can definitely reach out and touch them a long way downrange! Good out to 1000 yards for the right shooter, which excludes me. I've seen some great shooters rock that rifle!

I'd guess that the 130 gn Sierra HPBT over Varget or H4350 will accurately deliver death to any creature. Matchkings for varmints, Gamekings for deer.

Sierras because they hold together under pressure and high velocity.

I have had great success with the 110 Hornady hp over a near max load of H414. This load has shot very well in the 5 270 rifles I have tried it in. The factory 1-10 twist seems to work fine with this bullet. I have used it in Savage, Winchester, and Mauser rebarrels with the 1-10 twist. It is not by any means a "hide " bullet however.
Good Luck

Starting back in 1957 I used the 130-grain Remington Bronze Pt. for coyotes, jack rabbits, wood chucks and deer.  Found it to be a great varmint bullet, but a so-so deer bullet.  With 60-grains of surplus 4831 (now H4831) pushing it at over 3000 fps a flat shooter.
I use to drive a lot of extra miles to buy a couple hundred of them.  I was a kid thinking it was a good deer bullet.  I found it was better left to varmints.

;) Jim, I have a rebarreled .270 that I have been using quite a bit..so far the 110 Serria  soft pt.  has been a winner..A friend used this bullet as a whitetail deer bullet;, not sure about that but it is a coyote killer..

I have to agree that the 110-grain Sierra is a good bullet for coyotes and small deer.  A friend had used the bullet on small wild pigs and costal blacktail which run smaller then the North State blacktail.  He was/is a very successful hunter and I took his advice when I bought a 270 for my young son needing a low recoil load.

They can be pushed to around 3200 fps using surplus 4831.  I chose to load them at about 2900 fps.  The goal was to reduce recoil and preserve the barrel.  I was loading for a Remington 700.  This mild load has prove effective on coyotes.

A while back I came across a box of the 110-grain Sierra’s that was unopened in my inventory.  I loaded about fifty of them.
When the 270 was my only option I normally loaded bullets that were better for deer in the 130/140/150 grain range feeling those weights were better for deer, my primary target. Twenty years after getting my first 270 Winchester I had enough change to buy a 243 Winchester.  MY coyote bullet is 80-grain WW designed for varmints. As an alternate with the same point of impact I load an 80-grain Speer as a combination bullet.  I went to the 243 because it is effective on varmints, produces less recoil, and effective varmint rounds cost less than ones from my 270 Winchester.  I am a tie wad reloader.

I consider the 270 a better deer round.  A younger brother has taken a number of deer with the 243 using the Speer 80-grain bullet so I have no doubts regarding it on deer, but it is not a 270.

Currently there are four family members including myself using the 270 Winchester.

I have shot coyotes with lots of rounds, but my favorite '06 size cased for a long time was the .240 Weatherby. I used a Barnes 90X as an all around load, and it was pretty easy on coyote hides. The .220 Swift and 22-250 Imp were my favorite hot .22s ( I played with a 22/6mm awhile but shot no coyotes, too many surgeries at the wrong time of year then!)
The .270 became popular in Se Texas ( big woods/thickets) in the Browning auto and Remington pump in my neck of the woods. I used a .280, so had no use for one. I could never get used to the forearm of a  any pump I tried (shot friends rifles) so they never appealed to me, although they shot well indeed. I worked with a welder in Texas as a young man, and he used a BAR in .270 with a 3x9, shot deer/hogs off pipeline right of ways, so I was intrigued with that. I bought this old BAR here in Utah from a retiring hunter (first owner) when my dad died (2001) I had some nice engraving done to that slab side, cleaned, nice reblue job, just as a memorial really but it turned out to be a gee wiz shooter! My next trip to Texas for exotics or deer it will go with me. It is a tad heavy for me to pack in the mountains, which I did in 2001, but only shot a jack rabbit with it. I went back to my old Whelen in its synthetic stock for the mountains, whew. ha .

I have shot a bunch of coyotes with my 270 with 130 and 150 gr. bullets. These were mostly Hornady interloks but a few were killed with Nosler Partitions (150's). The way my luck runs if I want to shoot a coyote I just carry a 270 and there one is waiting to see if the old guy can still shoot. This holds true in both Texas and Wyoming.
