Clean it good first, then shoot it.
There are hundreds of "best" cleaning and break-in practices, use what you like, I use a muzzle guide(FAQs) on a 1-pc rod to protect the lands at the throat, and am careful when bringing a jag/brush back thru the muzzle which can damage the crown, I clean from the chamber end. Be sure to clean and dry the chamber as well as the locking latch and shelf when done, solvent/oil on those can cause problems, then shoot it, a new barrel may take some shooting before it shoots good and a clean Handi barrel will likely shoot best after well fouled.
