savage 170 B pump I pulled the PLUG Read third posting
« on: January 05, 2013, 06:19:55 PM »
Hello: Just got back from a gun show where I bought a Savage 170 B . The gun was in very nice shape Wood is the nicest I have seen in this model Blueing is very nice also. The wear in the action was very little seems real tight for the age. The part I am having problems with is hard feeding from the tube to the chamber .... Seems the round does not feed smoothly & also jumps over the tube catch tang between rounds causing a locked action. Was this the problem with these guns..I refuse to send this gun down the road It has very nice curb appeal..  The action screws seem like it was never taken apart..I was thinking Maybe a spring problem? Bent part problem? Was hoping to find someone on here that has had experience with the pump 170 b in 30-30 win...Please don't be shy I need help on this one....My son really wants this pump 30-30 but he will get frustrated if it ain't functioning correct.. Hope to here from you. Thanks Dale

Hello Softpoint, I have a Savage 170 like yours and as a matter of fact shot it today. My 170 is a good shooter, and has had no feeding issues, even with Hornady LeveRevelution shells. I would check to see if the screws holding the for-end to the barrel are tight and the tube straight.  You might also have crud in the carrier, an easy fix, as the trigger group can be accessed by one screw and a pin. Just be careful when you pop the pin out, it might bend. I have taken mine apart, and it is not difficult kind of like a pump shotgun (Which is what they used to make this rifle). The other thing when loading the tube magazine push the round fully so it is locked by the shell stop, don't just push it in and pull your finger out.

I Start out saying I still love savage,Just not the 170 model..Well I told my son that this function problem was not going to beat me...But everytime I thought I had it fixed it would act up again, with a feed problem...I new I had a plagued Savage when I would walk past a guy at a gun show that had a table full savages like 99s or 110 ect and they would not even want to look at the 170....What helped me trade this rifle was clean blueing very nice wood..I was upfront with the dealer and he said he smithed alot of these 170s....He traded me a new mossberg 500 in 20 gauge ,and my son could not be happier... A good day had by all..

For anyone else who has problems with the 170, here is a link to an article which might help:
