338 MXLR
« on: January 06, 2013, 10:13:43 AM »
.338MXLR
Obviously from the thread and poll in 2009 there were several people who looked at this and saw a natural for the Handi.
I wasn't paying attention then.
Due to recent events I am shedding my Black Rifles.
Looking for something new, I found a SS .338MXLR for sale locally.
Holding that cartridge in my hand, I have to say it is a natural for the Handi.

Before I start rummaging in the closet for a barrel to send to JES, does anyone have experience with a handi rebored for .338MX?

Thanks Gendoc.
Is that a .338 bore or a .30 bore?

I'm aware of what the 338MX is, I ran the poll to have H&R chamber it, but John stated J2 has done the 30-338LI which is the 30-338 Lapua Improved.

I think the 338 Fed would work just as well using 307 brass. I'm still thinking about it myself, but don't have a strong need for another midbore.

Thanks, Dinny

Since the .338 MX has .376 Steyr and 9.3 x 54 as parents,
...and the .338 Federal comes from .308;
I'd have a lot more sources for brass with the Federal,
and a lot more Handi barrels would be suitable for rebores.

So the Federal is probably a better choice for a Handi Project.
...Once again, Dinny has thoroughly studied the options
...and made an excellent choice.

...but that leaves my new lever gun an orphan. :-[

I was "talked into" the 356 Win stub otherwise I would have just had a barrel rebored to 338 Fed. I don't have any regrets but may have done it differently had I thought about it longer.

I would definitely talk to the gunsmith about lengthening the throat, especially if you intend to shoot heavier bullets. Give it the "Handi" advantage of seating bullet longer for more powder capacity. ;)

Thanks, Dinny

Another choice would be the 338 Federal. If a rim is desired ,a simple neck up or down from 307 /356 Win brass will be easy ans still use the more common 338 Dies. Also brass can be made from 308 sized cases. It can be chambered to shoot both rimless and rimmed cases as well
So many things to choose from

Another 338 to consider would be 338-06 or even Ackley, either for the extra case capacity over the 338 Federal, cut a rim recess and use 7x65R brass for a rimmed version!  8)

Another great choice! Prvi 7x65R brass is $107.95 per 100 mailed via USPS Priority from Reed's Ammo. ;)
