Marlin 1936 value?
« on: January 07, 2013, 03:40:33 AM »
Happy New Year!
I have a Marlin Model 1936 (1941 variant with "B" prefix to serial number) carbine in .30-30, very good condition with an excellent bore.  What would be the ball-park value of this rifle?  Thanks!

From the pics it would appear that the finish is not in that great of shape. It could be just the camera making it look that  way. I can still buy the old Ballard rifling Marlins around here for $250-350 bucks in near pristine shape. From chats with my FIL a few years ago, these rifles bring more money up north as he couldn't believe some of the prices I was paying for mint condition 336 SCs, which is the carbine version of the 336. I collect the SCs and the most I have in one is an unfired 32 Winchester Special that I paid $125.00. I would suggest checking the local market as the prices are subject to demand and here a short range weapon doesn't have much value. Everybody here wants a magnum to shoot our small deer (80lbs) at yardages of 100 or less with a 12+ power scope. Yeah, they walk among us here. Only us old coots are picking up these old shooters here and one day, these things will be recognized for the incredible shooter that they are. Then the cash register will ring.
Might try an online gun auction website and see what's available that's close to yours.

Just to be clear, this is NOT a 336, but the 1936 model (basically a model 1893 with upgrades) with color case-hardened receiver and square bolt.  The frosty gray look to the receiver is not worn out bluing, but the fading color case-hardening itself.  The bluing on the barrel and band is still quite strong....

to me that gun looks in very nice condition.almost too nice. notice the visble screw heads are completly unblemished. the case hardening looks correct for its age.it does tend to fade a bit.the blueing looks very good. the stock is nice but is missing a chip on the buttstock near the hammer.thats not good. im by no means a expert but if i was looking for that gun id pay $500.

its possible its worth much more if its not been refinished.if it was mine, id do more research and put it on a firearms auction site with a reserve and see what happens.if it is legit then someone took very nice care of it.

I am not a well versed collector, but from seeing guns sell out there, I think $600 to $900. It has got to be worth more than a nice 336. I see nice 336's made in the 1950's selling for $500.  Wallacem in Ga.

a shooter grade 36 around here would bring 500 bucks. A real nice one up around a grand

It looks like its in great shape from the pics. Bring that baby over to Marlinowners forum and watch them drool. I'm sure you'll get a very good idea of the value over there.
