Who knows why?

   I know the rifle had some minor teething problems..but why did Mossberg abandon their SS1?  With the bugs worked out, it seems like it would fit in well now.

That's a good looking rifle.  I don't know anything about them.  but we all like to look at "pretty."

Maybe low sales numbers and a small profit margin per unit?  Don't know, just guessing.
 
I thought about buying one when they came out, but already had a Ruger No.1 so just mulled it over for a while - and they were gone!
 
I think you might be right about them selling better now than they did back in the time period when they were originally introduced.  Seems like there is more interest in single shots now, especially budget priced ones.

I was at the SHOT Show they were first introduced at, and had a keen interest in checking them out at it.   For me as another alternative to my TC carbines, to companion my Browning B78's, Low/High Walls, or maybe fill in for the TCR's or Ruger No1's I once had.   After I handled them and asked what was planned for them down the road they were scratched off my list.   Quality just wasn't there, their long range projection for them not impressive at all.   So I assume like me others felt the same and they didn't sell well.   If I remember they were only offered for 3-4 years or so.  Too bad, I had other Mossberg's years before that served me quite well, one in particular that was my favorite and still would be my first choice 22MAG bolter if I had ever wanted another after I sold it (640K Chuckster).

i looked at them too when they first came out. my guess is they were too high priced for the handi type crowd and not quality enuf for the high end single shot guys.and there was rumours of teething problems.i really dont see a niche for a medium priced medium quality single shot.seems like guys want a cheap one or a really nice one.
the ruger is a proven seller and the handi is a proven seller, not much in between.

I have had two, a 223 which I still have and love and a 06 which I sold and wish I had not That being said I think That it would have been better received had they put a nice blue job on them and not the matt finish, I see them on the gun auction sites from time to time and they seem to bring a good price, also better marketing with some extra barrels and they would have had a winner in my opinion. supply and demand  is what makes or brakes a product and when you go up against a product with a good track record as TC has then it is hard to break into sales wise.

I am glad for your reply Deacon, I have long been curious about them, but had no info from someone who actually owns one.  Do you suppose it is time Mossberg did a redux?
   Ladobe speaks of the old Mossy .22 mags...I remember them well!  Over the years i have been doing favors for friends of doing the initial "sighting in" of rifles for them.  With most regular brands..an accurate .22 mag was a "crap shoot"..maybe good, maybe not..
  Not so with the Mossys..they were consistantly accurate..the only ones back then (1970s) which would come close to my own Anschutz .22 mags.
  I gave my Anschutz .22 mag to a grandson..then a few years later got the itch  for another one..tried several..not good  Finally bought a Marlin at a gun show, since my Marlins were normally real good...  When I tried it at home..I don't consider 1.25" groups as good..so I swapped iot for a Savage 93R17  G...needless to say the .17 HMR is a tack driver.  I was ready to "wash my hands" of .22 Mags..
  Then one dayI was at my local gun dealers..  There sat a newSabvage 93F .22 Mag with accutrigger..the price tag said $179..
  Just couldn't resist..
  Took it home and with a scope.... off to my range in the woods.  I was hoping for acceptable accuracy..can you imagine my surprise when I found a $179 rifle which would shoot right alongside my Anschutz?
  I do have an H&R Sportster with a .22 Mag/ 17HMR combo..and although the mag shoots pretty good, it's not really in league with the Savage.

One thing I did not mention is that the ssi has a pop up post to show that it is cocked and also has auto ejection much like a single shot shotgun.If I could find the barrels or guns for that matter in the cal I like I would much rather have the ssi than the Encore.But that is my like. I also find that they are not as hard to get sighted in and get a good group compaired to the Ruger number ones. I had one Ruger number one in 06 that we could never get to group finally traded it off for  another one and newer but have not shot it yet.dont get me wrong I have a bunch of number ones and they are a very fine gun. we all have likes and dislikes.

Well, truth be known, another factor that probably influenced me to the negative side on the Mossy was I had a bunch of Browning B-78's, 1885 High and Low Walls.   None of the standard commercial single-shots could match them as far as I was concerned then, at least not for my uses,... none of the No1's I had, not the TCR's or Contender carbines, or any of the multitude of others I'd had.   To me the only ones that rivaled the Browning's I had or had had was the Cooper's and Martini's (although neither really count with the Coops semi custom and the other custom jobs).   I didn't like the high gloss furniture on some of the Browning's, but every one of them was an exceptional shooter no matter what caliber with no fuss.   So to me, the Mossy couldn't even equal a TCR let alone any of the others when I saw it.    But to be fair i also never shot one.   common sense told me they wouldn't measure up shooting either, so I let it go at at.   It's a strange tangled web we weave for ourselves sometimes maybe, but they form our "current" opinions anyway - right or wrong.

 I think there may be a future for single shot rifles, especially the interchangable barrel type.  Some tyrant governors are suggesting (since Sandy hook) that any given owner be limited to a specific number of guns.  If they ever managed that in some "very blue" states, one gun with 5-6 barrels would be nice.

I would be carefull picking pictures off the web My older son did that for a picture to post on his buisness web site and got hit with a 800.00 photo use from the company that had originally posted and owned the copy rights. I am told that you tube has claimed all pictures posted as theirs dont know the how they can do that but they claim they can.something to think about.

I had a chance to check out the SSI when it was first introduced, It seemed a solid gun but it seemed heavy and clumsy for my purpose. I was looking for a lighweight walking around gun and handiness was important.

Did Mossberg make the rifle or is it a Baikal made in Russia? It sure loooks a lot like the Baikal I have that was brought in by Remington. Mine is in 7.62x39 and I would like to find  one in .223, and in 7mm.

i picked up a 22250 a couple years back at the local gun shop. The gun shop owner took it on trade. It was suppose to be new and had the tags hanging on it. I cleaned it before i shot it and got a bunch of copper out of it along with black. I got it cleaned and took it to the range with a box of reloads i had on the shelf. First two shots touched and the third wasnt even on the target or the forth and fifth shot. Took it back home figuring may the scope was loose and when it all checked out i looked down the bore and the rifling was just full of copper. I cleaned it again and looked down the bore and it looked like hell. The rifling was all full of chatter marks the whole lenght of the barrel you could see with your eyes. Brought it back and got my money back imediately.

yu did rite there.i looked at them hard as i love single shots.they just didnt seem to have the quality in line.my only single shot rite now is my gpas 32-40 winchester.i had a ruger no 1. but it kept dumpin the shell when my hunting coat snagged the lever.nice rifle for sure and killed tons of deer with it.
