New York Democratic Rep. Jose Serrano is once again proposing a constitutional amendment to end presidential term limits – hoping to break his losing streak on the resolution that dates back roughly 15 years.
However, the 12-term congressman likely faces long odds, as before, considering the resolution has no sponsors, never got a vote last year in the Republican-controlled House, needs two-thirds support in both chambers and ratification from roughly 75 percent of state legislatures.

The joint resolution would repeal the 22^nd Amendment to the Constitution.
Supporters of the idea say the Constitution keeps Americans from re-electing their most successful leaders. However, Serrano re-introducing the proposal has ignited a firestorm on social media, with critics suggesting it is un-American.
Serrano, who represents south Bronx and is a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, has yet to respond to a request for comment.
H.J. Res. 17 now goes to the House Judiciary Committee.
Franklin D. Roosevelt is the only president to serve more than two terms -- his presidency, which lasted into a fourth term before he died, preceded the passage of the 22nd Amendment.

+2 for term limits. and while their at it no more retirement with full benefits after 4 yrs. Someone will probably need to correct me on this. In order to change the constitution does't there have to be a constitutional convention with all the states there? Aside from the fony reps we have now?

Term limits for everyone, even the Supreme Court. Congress and the Senate get paid whatever the average pay for an American Family is (currently I think is 51K). They pay a minimum of 50% of their heath care premiums. 10 days sick leave a year or your salary starts being reduced if more in session days are missed for any reason. They pay into SS and that will be their only retirement benefit. If these things were implemented I think the "common man" would have a much better chance of serving.

It seems like they try to get this lifting the cap on presidential terms going every so often and it never goes any where. I am not very concerned at this point but I'll be watching. Besides, the Constitution means nothing to this president. If he wants a 3rd term he is going to run for a 3rd term regardless of what that "flawed document" says and no spineless rino republicans will utter a peep about it.

I prefer ALL federal officials be limited to a single term. Six years would be about right. Two years for Representatives is absurd. They can't even find their way to the men's room in two years. Six years would be long enough for them to learn the ropes and hopefully accomplish something. The important thing is that it be ONE term. A politician that is always looking ahead to a reelection campaign and running all over the country blowing his own horn is not tending to business, our business.

I don't know if I would call it coming around. It seems time for both parties to have some kind of reality check. Bagtic may have it right by limiting to one six year term. One should not expect to be set for life by serving as congressman or a senator, it is suppose to be a public service, kind of like jury duty, not a way of life.

There is something to be said however with having a long enough term to be effective but not wasting time to get reelected. Yea, six years may be a long time to put up with a jackass but you have just have two or three jackasses in a row elected. Crap shoot no matter how you look at it.

I think there should be a cummulative lifetime term limit in place for all politicians. Maybe something like 16 years. Once you have served 16 years in any elected position at any level of government be it local, state, or federal you are done and are no longer eligible to hold any elected office period, and I would also throw in the idea of them paying for thier own retirement and healthcare just like the rest of us have to do. Career politicians need to go the way of the dinosaur.

This has happened in the past. I think when Clinton was in office one of the communist senators introduced this same bill. There are a number of them that would love to have Obama as our third world dictator. I might be worried if this bill was going to go up for a vote, because we certainly have plenty of communists in our government, but its not.

Yes two years is enough for a congressman. Just look what they can screw up in even that amount of time. As far as wages go, for what they do 50K would be to much, but they have voted themselves 170K per year, plus all the perks. Instead most of them should be in jail.

I agree on the term limits. What I found equally if not more alarming is the "Executive Order" arrangement that is more and more often used these days when it isn't a real emergency but a way to get around Congressional debate and approval.The present gun control debate is heading this way.
I'm aware that these Orders are subject to removal by the next President but up to almost 8 years is way to long for something to stand this way.

the original intent of the founding fathers was that those in congress would serve one, maybe two, terms, then return to their respective communities and allow others to serve.

this was intended to enable all to have a chance at 'serving' and to educate the populace as to what and how the federal govt functions and to offer their input and contributions.

as we see evidenced by today's career politicians, it' s highly abused.

i agree with the limits many have suggested above...

Not one to usually comment on this but the use of executive order to get around the constitutional requirements really has me worried. The legislative branch needs to really assert their constitutional priviliges. We need more strict constitutional judges. The constitution is not an outdated document.

The problem with two 2 year terms is that a new member doesn't know his way around and it takes time to learn the ropes. I always say that most of the first term is learning the way to the latrine. After about 6 months this new member starts campaigning for reelection so the rest of that term is shot to Hell.
I once lived where all the school teachers straight out of college with no experience. They were hired because they were cheap. They were also replaced by the end of the third year so they would not acquire tenure and therefore could be replaced with more cheap 'trainees'. You can imagine what kind of school that provided.

I saw on TV or some where that Nancy Plosie withh get a retirement for being a rep , speaker of the house and minority leader . Why three seperate checks ? give her the highest one that is enough.
