Has my new .35 Whelen been repaired?
« on: January 07, 2013, 03:50:48 PM »
I just bought a new .35 whelen today.  I was aware of the failure to fire issues of the past, but rolled the dice anyways.  Well since the sale, I've come to find out my gun is on the recalled SKU list, 72540.  I never was good at gambling and shouldn't have jumped so quickly with the purchase.  They are just next to impossible to find in south MS with the new primitive weapon laws.  Anyways, I call the store I purchased it at and tell them my concern I have bought a lemon and should I return it before I fire it and it becomes a used gun. I am told to crack the barrel open, and to look for some writing on the side of the barrel that can only be seen when opened.  I see a stamp that I believe says REP and then there is some light hand engraving that appears to be some numbers and letters.  The man at the store says my gun has been repaired based on this.  Is this correct?  What do the numbers and letters mean?  Thanks.

Hand engraving on the side of the lug will match up with the last 3 digits of the S/N, don't know that this has anything to do with servicing that gun.  REP in a circle means Remington English Proof, which means that the gun was made by Remington since the purchase of Marlin.  GW

Go ahead and shoot the thing, not near all of them have any difficulties.  There are cures for misfiring found in the FAQ, or you can send it in and they will make it good.

The service notice states to contact H&R for repair only if you have misfires, it applies to rifles made in 2010 per the service notice below from the FAQs sticky.

I hear the horror stories about all the mis fires,  my whelen has been flawless and i have put around 100 rounds thru so far.  I love to shoot it,  but has gotten pretty expensive with ammo cost.

i got curious so i checked my numbers and my rifle is one of the numbers listed on the recall list.  i do intend on sending mine back but only for a small caliber barrel. I'm still trying to decide between 22-250 or 223.
