How many Maxi Rifles are out there?

Anyone got a clue as to how many Maxi Handis there are...original or rechambered?  Tim, how many times have the reamers gone out? How about other single shots....Rugers, T/Cs, etc.  Any leverguns converted to Maxi?  Bolt guns?  Etc. etc.  Our third one is being done now, Savage 24 .357 Maxi/20 ga.  It seems the popularity of the caliber is growing and ammo and components should follow.

What I'm tryin to figure out is how many Maxi's are running loose in the world wanting to be fed.  Not so much how many of US own maxis.  I would venture a guess that perhaps as many as 25% of the Handiholics roaming around here have one or more.  Are there any industry stats on that?

I have one Handi (scoped) and I'm probably going to do another one for a peep sight.  They are becoming more popular here in IN given our goof ball deer regs.  Loaded ammo is available for sale (180 XTP) at $70 for 50 :o in a local shop.  I spoke to a guy at a local gun show a couple months ago and he told me he had reamed 30 Handi's in the past year.  Most of what he had to sell was 357 Maxi related, AA1680, 180 SSPBs, and brass.

I've only read of one lever gun converted to 357 Maxi, a custom Marlin I as I recall.  You are going to have to really want a lever gun in 357 Maxi, the conversion was very salty.

Pete, I would bet it is quite a few. Problem is a dog chasing it's tail. anyone with a rifle or even a TC pistol in this caliber hand loads. factory ammo is too generic. we all want ammo tailored to each use. i bought one box of 20 because at the time i could not get brass. thats it, probably won't buy anymore. The manufactures don't make what we want because there is not enough demand, so we make our own (ammo and guns so chambered), and demand never goes up! I saw a .32-20 hand ejector at a lgs last weekend. wouldn't that be cool to go with a handi or lever gun in that caliber? just not enough buyers of oddball stuff to justify the production costs. looked all over the area for a .327 fed mag pistol and found only 1. a ruger gp100 they want 700 dollars for! seems unless you want the vanillia mainstream stuff you are gonna have to build it.

I wouldn't think there would be any data except brass sales, bullet sales wouldn't tell you much since they are used in other cartridges.  I would guess most rifles are either custom TC or home reamed Handi's.  I don't know of any current commercial offering of the 357 Maxi.  Although H&R could corner that market for minimal cost.  Given the upcoming war on Remington's favorite AR15 platform we might see more interest in getting more out of the margins at the lower divisions.

cwlongshot and I both have one of each.  A Marlin 1984CL and a Handi .32-20.  And yes, they are the Cat's Meow. ;)   CW took a buck with his Handi .32-20 this past season.  I have a feeling my next purchase is going to be a .32-20 Single Six to keep the Handi and Marlin company..

Just with the two GBO Maxi reamers about 150-175 rents, some of those were for multiple rechambers tho, I did a few with it before sharing it, several were done on TCs and even one on a vintage Savage!!!!  ;D

I would think that the only way to get an idea how componets are selling is to look at how many 357 Maximum brass is sold each year. Since Remington is the only manufacturer, how many cases they sell a year would be an indication of popularity. I chart with yearly sales by year would be insightful.

I inherited a Colt Police Positive Special in .32-20 which got me on the .32-20 train.  I now have an original Marlin 1894 (mid 1920's vintage), a Colt Army Special, and a Colt clone single action, all in .32-20.  I very much enjoy shooting them, but ammo is expensive and hard to find in the stores.  Used to find it at Gun Shows, but haven't seen any in recient years, so I don't actually shoot them much any more. Have fun with yours.

I just been thinking to myself the last few days how a 357 max handi would be nice to have. I think this would be a good all around cartridge for reloaders. Half the lead of my 45-70 and less powder. Does 38 special and mag rounds still shoot alright after being converted? Rick!

I have a factory original with electroless nickel. I shoot all three including .357 with deep seated RB. Quite a jump to the leade. All shoot good considering. The RB is rabbit accurate to 50 yards about as far as I can hit with iron sights anyway. The .357 about like my .357 Magnum rifles.

Yes, usually better because the GBO reamers are PTG rifle reamers which cut a 6º ramp into the lands at the throat which is an improvement over the factory abrupt lands.

 I have a factory TC 14" and a reamed Handi. I also was at a gun show last summer. There were to 2 gun dealers that ream and sell the Handi's.

I have 1, because that is all I can shoot at one time. However, I have thought about getting a second 357 for just for 38 special loads. A while back I bought 500 357 Max cases, so I do not think I will need any more, but you never know.

I have 2 maxis at the moment. One is getting sent off to be re-chambered to .358 Win.
