Another amazing sale on evilBay
« on: January 08, 2013, 08:23:41 AM »
02/05/13:

A one inch octagon tang, $87+freight. Don't sell your rifle, take it apart.

01/07/13:

On evilBay a T/C .58 'Big Bore' [Renegade] barrel went for $440.00+shipping. The description claims exellent condition. It seems as the economy spirals down, smokepoles spiral up. This is similar to gold. I guess this is akin to full auto because one trigger pull and you're empty.

What some people are willing to pay truly amazes me. Couldn't you have purchased a top notch custom barrel for that price?

I went a different route - bought a 54 cal. Renegade barrel that is rusty on the inside and like new on the outside for very little money. Going to send it to Bob Hoyt and have it bored and rifled properly to 58 cal. for round balls. He gets $100 for that job, so for little money I'll have a TC barrel with real cut rifling. Way better than $400 for one with a rough button rifled bore that has rifling too shallow and a twist too fast.

I suppose where you live has something to do with supply & demand.  :o when I lived in a Alaska bush village if I wanted something & I had the money, I bought it. Many times if you didn't then you did without.  ;) of course here in the mainland, you just go to another store.

Yeah maybe, but the other side of the coin on FleaBay is a much larger one.   Muzzy parts that get next to nothing when sold.   Far below what their honest value is let alone a fair price, just what's left over after the fees charged for listing and selling there.   While any auction house can get fast and furious if two or more want something bad enough, it's also a place where you can loose you butt far more often as a seller.

It's been suggested I part out my TC Hawken switch lock, switch barrel that was custom built by a well known eastern muzzy smith/long range BP competitor.   I was asked if I had the nerve to chance the parts on eBay with a dollar starting price.  My reply, while I have been fearless all my life I'm not giving it away - it will go in the trash first.   Would be sad to break it up in the first place, all matched and hand fitted with 36, 45 and 50 barrels with high end sights plus custom accessories.   With the strong possibility of way less than what it is honestly appraised at, or even the 100's less price I want for it complete, I have not attempted to part it out at auction.  Did consider parting it out briefly on regular classifieds at fair/honest prices that are less than what they were also appraised at individually.    But classifieds have changed drastically the last 6-7 years, few are willing to pay asking even if well below fair, many not even willing to pay shipping.   While a $100 offer might be good for the bottom dweller who offered it, it's not for the seller on an honest $350 mint all but unused item listed $100 below new cost.  Yes, that was a real offer I got once, and the troll got nasty when I refused it (I sold it later to a gentleman for $335 plus shipping).

It's the same with my Mountain Rifle even though they are always in pretty high demand... I've never even listed it.   I've sold down from 15 to 2 traditional muzzies the last few years on forum classifieds, and mostly only those sold the earliest got what I really wanted for them... a fair price (but most still below their honest value).  FWIW

I've sold many parted out muzzleloaders on ebay.  I've made a barrel of money at it.

I like money.  Selling on ebay feeds my habits without impacting the family budget.
