Glock 27 question ?
« on: February 14, 2004, 05:53:46 PM »
Has anyone got any expierence with replacing the magazines baseplate with a finger grip extension or a plus 1 extension ? They really are a pain in the _ _ _  to get the old base plate off. Is there a trick to make this easier ? Any help would be greatly appreciated, and thanks in advance for suggestions.

They are a pain, but well worth the trouble. My "method" is to use Vise Grips sheet metal clamps.  Tried to do it with fingers  and never could. Put on the mag, tighten, remove, tighten a hair more and then clamp them on. All you need to do is clear the little ears that are on the sides of the mag, them you can use a punch to depress the button on the bottem and slide the base plate off. Caution is in order NOT TO CRACK THE MAG TUBE.  Done about 20 this way for myself and friends with no problem.
Hope this helps.

As mentioned the little side notches are a problem.  I use a small C clamp to compress the sides near the base before pushing the bottom button.  You can pad the C clamp and its less likely to scar the mag.  Yes there is a fine line between not enough pressure to release the notch and cracking the mag sleeve.  Good luck.

And now for the rest of the story....

Buy a 3/16 punch also known as a Glock armorer tool. When you get the punch home use it to push down on the magazine insert, that is the little button on the bottom of the floor plate. Push the punch into the bottom of the floor plate until the insert does not come back down into the floor plate hole. This insert is just a little locking mechinism to keep the floor plate on. Althogh I have never seen any of the old versions come off on their own.

Next, pinch the sides of the magazine tube next to the floor plate. While pushing on the sides push take the floor plate and push it against a hard surface until you hear a pop. That pop is the floor plate releasing.

Another option is to pinch the side as stated above then insert you 3/16 punch into the bottom of the floor plate, wrap your fingers of your other hand around the punch and place your thumb on the front of the mag tube and pry  the floor plate off.

Once the floor plate is loose every thing will come apart and reassemble in reverse order.

Use the above method and you won't void the factory warranty.

Hope that helps,

Jay

Takes about 3 seconds to remove the base plate with this tool.
