Are 25 cal HP's fur friendly?
« on: January 10, 2013, 07:17:22 AM »
Now that my deer season has wound down, I went to order some 223 cal. bullets I wanted to try on coyotes; the 52 gr. Sierra Match King HPBT.  After checking reviews in a number of places, it got very high marks as being fur friendly.  We're talkin DRT, no exit wound.

Naturally, now that I want them the supplier I use lists them as out of stock, no backorder!   ::)

I couldn't find another 223 bullet that was reviewed so positively in this area so I resigned myself to using FMJ's this year.  Then I remembered I had a couple of hundred 100 gr. Speer 25 cal. HP's!  I had bought them off the GBO classifieds a good bit back.  A seller had advertised them as SP's but they were HP's.  >:(  It wasn't worth the effort to me to send them back to him so they have just been sitting on a shelf.   :(

I hunted with my 25-06 Handi Rifle this year and found I really like the cartridge.  And I hold the quarter bores right up there with the 6.5's in my highest esteem!   ;)

So I says to myself, "Self, maybe the 25 HP's are fur friendly!?"  :-\  And here I am, asking the opinion of those who know!    Or don't know but still have an opinion!   ;D

I would doubt it very much. I have killed alot of groundhogs with 75 gr. HP`s and they left great big holes. Have you checked all of the online dealers? Seem like someone should have the 52 gr. bullets. The 53`s will do the same job, they are just a flat base of the same bullet.

I don't think any .25 caliber bullet would be fur friendly out of a 25-06. That's a whole lotta wallop for a little coyote.

Unfortunately, you won't find ANY .22 caliber bullets in stock, anywhere...except for the really expensive ones, like Nosler Partitions.

A 25-06 sending any type of an HP through a coyote except for a really long range where the bullet has slowed down is going to leave a mess in the calling field more times than not.
It's all a hot mess...........

Thanks boys... that's kinda what I figgured.   :(

And 224 cal bullets are virtually non-existant!   :o   About the only ones I've found available, right now at least, are the 50 and 55 gr. DogTowns.

Wasn't there a long discussion on these bullets a while back?   ???   They're cheap enough.  I guess I could get 500 of the 50 grainers and hope for the best.   :-\

I can send you a handful of HPs.  I'll look in the AM to see how many I've got.

I've used both 50 and 55gr DogTowns, and they do just fine. I use the 50's for .222 and the 55's for .22-250. Both have been very accurate. I think they're just a re-packaged Sierra bullet, anyway. I may be wrong, but they look awfully similar, when you compare them.

Shoot, after I wrote that I went back to the supplier to order them and they were sold out!   :o  I'm glad I have a pretty good stash or I'd be getting right upset about this component situation!   >:(  I hate democraps!   >:(

I can't believe I just said that!   :o  I don't hate anybody!  Well there is one group of people I don't have much use for, but generally I don't think it's worth the mental consternation to get that worked up about something.   :-\

I need some happy pills...  :P

I appreciate that Ben, but I don't want you to put yourself to the trouble.  Not after all the favors you have done for me.  I'll just use some of my milsurp 55 gr. FMJ's.  I have plenty and it shoots very well in my Handi.

Probably won't get to go anyway...  :-\  and can't see much noway neither...  :'(

25-06 has too much velocity and energy to be fur friendly on a Coyote.  I sometimes blow a hole big enough to put your fist through on a Wolf using my 25-06.  Wolves are much bigger than a Coyote.

Problem with the .223 FMJs is that they usually won't anchor a Coyote.  He will be dead, but it will take him a while to realize it.  He can go a long way during that time.  Hit a bone to anchor it and that won't be fur friendly.  Rog
Where is old Joe when we really need him?  Alaska Independence    Calling Illegal Immigrants "Undocumented Aliens" is like calling Drug Dealers "Unlicensed Pharmacists"
What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

if you had some target bullets they might work but I don't know. They are not made to open up.

That was my thought also.   :-\  But I tend to overthink things anyway...  :-[  If I 'speriment and ruin a few hides so what?  It ain't like we about to run outa coyotes!   ::)

I may even break out that (marginal deer cartridge  ;) ;D ) 243 Browning Low Wall and use the 55 gr. Nosler BT's I loaded a while back!    ;D

That's what made me think of the Sierra's in the first place.  I'll check but I'm sure they are the .257, 100 gr., HPBT Matchking.

Heck!   :o  Y'all made this easy for me!   :P  I'll just try the .223 FMJ, the .243 55 gr. BT and the 25/06 100gr HPBT!!  ;D  Like I said, darn coyotes ain't exactly on the endangered species list here 'bouts!   ;)

.223 FMJ's will anchor a coyote if you hit em in the right place. I don't use em here mainly because I prefer fragmenting bullets. There are a few places here that are a bit flat, and tougher bullets might skip a few times before stopping. I feel a lot more comfortable using a bullet that I know is going to come apart as soon as it hits something.

I'm a huge fan of the .243. I use 87 grain v-max bullets in mine, and it kills like Thor's hammer. If its marginal on deer, they must be wearin body armor down there ;D . Heck, it doesn't matter what you use. Best thing to shoot a coyote is whatever ya got with ya!
