870 Marine Magnum Info.
« on: January 11, 2013, 09:05:13 AM »
So i've been shooting my brothers 870 for over a year now, fell in love with it. With my income tax return this year I will be buying a shotgun. I busted my ass all year at a minimum wage, dead end job. I deserve something nice at the end of the seasons :D

I have my eye on the 870 Marine Magnum. These are essentially the same setup at the 870 Express, correct? Except of course this is nickel plated everywhere! From what I understand every single component inside and out of this model of 870, is nickel. Completely rust resistant, which is good seeing as how I shoot alot during the wetter monthes.
What's everyone opinion on this shotgun? I do have intentions of hunting sometime in my life for flying foul. However I will plan on purchasing a cheap H&R Pardner. I don't think a shiny bright rifle would be too good for hunting.

Years ago I had one. Unless it changed it is not like the express but like the police magnum. Mine did not have all parts nickled . But police magnums have some of the parts build of better material and springs are up graded. One thing that stands out other than color is weight . One way to tell quickly what 870 you are looking at is the top of the reciver if there is a groove on top that would line up with a vent rib it is not an express unless that has also been changed . Express recivers are rounded no groove.

Thanks! Those are good little pieces of information to know about these.
The civilian models of the Marine 870's are not accompanied with the upgraded springs and whatnot are they?
Do the Marine's weigh more because of the nickel, as opposed to the tradtional black steel of the 870's?

The marine mag. is a Speical Purpose 870 not an express it seems . I don't know if the springs are up graded or not . You can buy police models if you like . I think it's the nickle that adds weight but then the plastic stock may also. If you plan to add a side saddle shell holder to your gun it will need a police forearm to clear the it when working the slide . If you notice the Marine has a black trigger housing so I doubt the internals are nickle but I could be wrong.

I plan on throwing a wood stock and forgrip on it right away.
And would love to get a 3-4 shell side saddle for it. Would one still mount up if I chose to go wood on the forgrip and stock?

look online at the Remington site. Notice the difference between a Police magnum shotgun and other 870's. The forearm is smaller , it does not come back over the reciever when retracted. Any standard forearm will be blocked by the ammo holder . As a suggestion if you plan to change to wood anyway and want a ammo holder why not look at the police magnum ? the finish is very good and you get the spring upgrade along with a gun set up for the ammo holder and wood stock . They come in 12 and 20 ga.
