Former Secretary of State Colin Powell says his own Republican Party is having "an identity problem."  Powell criticized the GOP for their views on climate change to taxes.  Most importantly? The party has a "dark vein of intolerance" running through it and "if they don't change" along with America's changing demographics, "they are going to be in trouble."

"Everybody wants to talk about, 'Who's going to be the candidate?'" Powell said. "You've got to think first about what's the party actually going to represent?  If it's just going to represent the far right wing of the political spectrum, I think the party is in difficulty.  I'm a moderate, but I'm still a Republican."

  • Where is John Galt?
I watched his interview on the Sunday shows, and as always, see Powell as a dem who either hasn't figured it out, or doesn't want to admit it. J

Who really gives a flying fling what Colon Powell thinks.  At best he is a squishy dumycrat and has never been any paragon of conservative thinking.

I think Powell is the one with the identity crisis. He seems to think the Republican party should think like he does and he thinks like a Democrat.

There was a time I would have voted for this guy to be President. Not anymore. When he said he voted for Obama because he was black,,,that was it. I always respected Powell because he had demonstrated to all, that he was professional, intelligent, and a great leader...oh, and happened to be black.

There was a time I would have voted for this guy to be President. Not anymore. When he said he voted for Obama because he was black,,,that was it.

Actually that is not what he cited for voting for Obama -

Powell cited the president’s handling of the economy and foreign policy successes in explaining his decision.

“When he took over the country was in very, very difficult straits, we were in one of the worst recessions we had seen in recent times, close to a depression,” Powell said of the economy Obama inherited from his former boss George W. Bush. “We were in real trouble.
I saw over the next several years stabilization come back in the financial community, housing is now starting to pick up after four years, it’s starting to pick up. Consumer confidence is rising. So I think generally we’ve come out of the dive and we’re starting to gain altitude,” Powell explained.

Powell said he has the “utmost respect” for Mitt Romney but was concerned about his shifting foreign policies. “The governor who was speaking on Monday night at the debate was saying things that were quite different from what he’s said earlier, so I’m not quite sure what Governor Romney we would be getting with respect to foreign policy,” he said.

He also took issue with Romney’s economic proposals. “As I listen to what his proposals are especially with respect to dealing with our most significant issue, the economy, it’s essentially let’s cut taxes and compensate for that with other things. But that compensation does not cover all of the cuts intended or the new expenses associated with defense,”

Does he have a new book out or is he angling for a position somewhere(run for Pres.)?
His handlers have placed this POS out there quite a bit lately,  otherwise he would be completely irrelevant.

Not according to the majority of American voters. Have it your way, but don't complain if the Republicans lose the next election as well.

I'm of the opinion there are a lot more Chris Christie, Colin Powell and Megan McCain republican voters than Michelle Bauchmann Eric Cantor types. If the republican pendulum continues it far right swing towards non-mainstream minority republican fringe views it's inevitable as a party they will cease to exist as a relevant party on a national stage in all future elections.

Powell wants the Republican Party to join the Democrats on the far left. So do some people here on this thread.

Massive military cutbacks and a pacifist foreign policy. Massive welfare state spending and don't ever call them lazy because that's considered racist. Gays, abortion, and legalized drugs. They want US to become Amsterdam.

It should be pointed out that Powell is very much in favor of gun control. He thinks that only military and police should have firearms.

Powell is a affirmative Acton made man.He used the Republican party to get his four stars and the Republican party used him to get the middle to upper class black vote. Now that he has nothing more to gain, the real Powell stands up.Nothing new here, and I would have been surprised if he had NOT supported Obama.
I wouldn't be shocked to hear GW voted for Obama over Romney ;)

There aren't enough conservatives in this country to matter anymore.

They will if they move more toward center. Both our political parties are either too right or too left. The one that makes the first move toward center will be the winner because that's where most of the voters are.

Welfare and food stamps win elections.  The republican party will never win another election.

Just when has the republican party moved to the far right? Anymore they are just a bunch of progressives, and you think they are moving far right? Anyway I could give a rats ass what the mainstream majority thinks. It doesn't make it right just because the majority thinks so. This kind of thinking is just the very reason why our founders set up a Constitutional Republic. To prevent tyranny of the majority.
So if the democrats and the majority who elected them, what to disarm America, then you are saying that the Republicans should just jump on the bandwagon. Kind of like, just fall in line with the majority, because thats what they want.

Powell a full blown progressive socialist telling the Republicans they need to jump on the bandwagon and join the democrats, and mainstream America, in helping to destroy any conservatism thats left. What a joke.
Those people who will not be governed by God will be ruled by tyrants.    Wm. Penn

Some of us former Republicans have known this for some time. Good reason for letting them slide into the night, and start backing a good third party ;) If they don't have a chance anyway.......Whats to lose?

  • IF ONLY I COULD GO BACK-I WOULD BE A MOUNTAIN MAN!
Sounds like what you all are saying is the Conservatives are to few and the Reps are too far left to ever get reelected.
The third party doesn't have enough supporters or money to ever get elected so I guess we are just stuck with the far left liberal Dems for the rest of our life?

NOT!

The real reason that THE LIAR got reelected is because of two things.
(1)- so many of the people hated Mitt and voted one of the other ways or didn't vote at all (STUPID for not voting)!
(2)- THE LIAR was offering everything to all sides and they were naive enough to believe him.
All of these things is the reason he got reelected.
Anyone that voted any of the following ways are why we still have a fool trying to run this country.
(1)- If you voted for THE LIAR because you hated or didn't trust Mitt Romney.
(2)- If you voted for the third party because you hated or didn't trust Mitt Romney.
(3)- You didn't vote at all for any reason other then a sudden emergency.
(4)- If you voted for THE LIAR because you believed the trash he was talking.
Pretty much any of these reasons helped make the difference.

In my mind the third party stands no chance of getting elected at this time.
I would have voted third party had it been against any other person then THE LIAR.
I surely wasn't going to vote for THE LIAR!
I will never give up my right to vote!

Yes, I voted for Mitt as I felt he stood the best chance to get rid of what we had/have now.
I voted for the Elephant but we wound up with the same ole Jack Ass!
If we last this long and we still have elections in four years he will be gone and maybe then I can fully join others in voting for someone better to run this country.

These are my opinions and you don't have to like them!
We are still free to think what we want SO FAR???
