Retired Gen. Stanley McChrystal came out in favor of gun control restrictions on a Tuesday morning appearance on MSNBC's "Morning Joe."
"I spent a career carrying typically either a M16, and later a M4 carbine," he said. "And a M4 carbine fires a .223 caliber round, which is 5.56 millimeters, at about 3,000 feet per second. When it hits a human body, the effects are devastating. It's designed to do that. That's what our soldiers ought to carry."
"I personally don't think there's any need for that kind of weaponry on the streets and particularly around the schools in America. I believe that we've got to take a serious look . I understand everybody's desire to have whatever they want but we have to protect our children and our police and we have to protect our population. And I think we have to take a very mature look at that."

"I think serious action is necessary. Sometimes we talk about very limited actions on the edges, and I just don't think that's enough, I think we have to look at the situation in America. The number of people killed by firearms is extraordinary compared to other nations. I don't think we're a bloodthirsty culture, and we need to look at everything we can do to safeguard our people."

Ain't it great. His leadership did not bring victory in Afghanistan, he HAD to resign from service, now the new media trots the disgraced ex-general (collecting a government pension) telling us how to be better American citizens. Many sheeple will use his view as Gospel. Excellent play by the socialists.  >:( >:(

He wants some kind of draft, or universal mil service of some kind, too.

so would the service be free ? how did he say we would pay for such ? come to think about it if every American citizen was furnished with a 24/7 armed guard maybe gun control would make sense . Naw who would watch the guards and that too would cost to much. better to allow guns and each citizen decide how best to defend themselves and with what according to their ablity to fund it.

I wonder if it's possible that the general never had any experience with any other caliber? There must be hundreds of calibers and bullet combos that will "devastate" a human body. Who knows, maybe he never shot anything else and didn't know any better than to pick just one caliber out and make a comment. Didn't sound too bright to me. I guess using this analogy...my 30-30 will suspect, not to mention the bigger bores and higher pressure rounds that I own. Gee, just think what a 22-250 will do.... ::)
We are going to hear lots of stupid comments by lots of famous people...stay tuned...lots more coming. And there will be and endless supply of people willing to push all the dumb comments around the internet for pot stirring competitions.

At one time bullets did tumble, but that was un-ententional.  the Army fixed that and now it's in and out like any FMJ bullet.  I guess McChrystal carried that same old slow-twist m-16 with that same old original issue ammo.  that shows that he didn't shoot his and therefore doesn't know what he talking about.

Maybe he's been around long enough his AR had a longer barrel with just enough velocity? That bullet will tumble when it hits.
Jesus said we should treat other as we'd want to be treated... and he didn't qualify that by their party affiliation, race, or even if they're of diff religion.

I guess he would be opposed to the 50 bmg in civilian hands?  How about a 12 ga. slug.  If he thinks the 5.56 is bad, I sure don't want to show him a real  thumper.

I watched his speech.  and I do believe that those kids were coached by mom or dad. my daughter wasn't interested in the news at that age.
plus he spent another $500 million at one stroke.

For those who haven't served...
Once an field grade officer becomes a bird colonel, he often goes "political"..McChrystal likely notwithstanding.  Many have their eye on a future career..often in politics, so they have to start "polishing apples" of their chosen variety.  Presidents will often reach to a colonel of convictions similar to their own and promote them rapidly..just to get their will done right down in the ranks!

I hadn't thought of that, but it's probably the truth.
