switching barrels and accuracy

What kind of accuracy can be expected when switching between barrels without resighting?

I'm going to comment about the accuracy when you switch barrels, but I want to be frank with you, I think the last time I switched barrels was about a year ago.  I've been trying to get dedicated receivers for each barrel. 

The last time, I switched barrels, I took off a .223Rem barrel, and put on a .243.  Both barrels were originally fitted to the same frame.  Accuracy on the .243 was within 6" (IIRC) from the original POI. The POI was definitely different, but it would have still hit a deer sized  target at 100 yards. 

From what I understand, guys that regularly switch barrels back and forth on a frame usually use a FAT wrench to insure that the same amount of torque is applied when changing to a different barrel.  This ensures that almost everything is the same as when the barrel was originally sighted in.  Still I would guess there would be a little deviation in the POI.

I've got a 9 barrel switch set-up and have no issues.  My .223 shoots .31" c-c groups regularly at 100 yards.  The .45-70 is sub-moa as is the 357 magnum.  Others seem to have issues.  guess I'm really luck on the switch thing.

To me, switching was always a PITA.  All mine are on dedicated frames and stocks and I have spare frames for additional barrel fitting.  KISS.

I have switch barrels and have no POI issues with swapping them out. I do have a dedicated fore end for each barrel and they get switched as well as the barrel. I have marked each fore end in the barrel groove with what barrel they go to, just so they will not get mixed up. The relationship between the barrel/receiver/fore end stays the same. The fore ends are also pillar bedded to enhance the repeatability. Of course, each barrel has it's own scope as well. I am not sure if that is all needed, but it works for me.

My POI's don't shift more than an inch on barel swaps... I won't say they don't shift at all... but I started something new with a takedown knob that has made a huge difference in barrel swapping consistency in my experience... I posted on it here;

I have a 243 on my sb2 frame. My plan is to d&t my TrackerII slug barrel for a scope. I would like to be able to switch between 20 gauge slugs and 243 with little or no problem.

I've never tried the switching barrel thing, since getting my rifle to shoot the way I want it to on a dedicated receiver can be hard enough, so deliberately making it more complicated would just make my brain hurt..

I like the process... if you don't then a dedicated receiver is the way to go.
