Reince Priebus backs electoral vote change
« on: January 15, 2013, 04:23:26 PM »
Republicans in a variety of states -- including Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Ohio -- have raised the prospect of changing the way their states' electoral votes are allocated in presidential elections. Instead of winner-take-all contests in which the candidate who wins the most votes in the state then wins that state's electoral haul, some in the GOP want district-by-district races. That way, in a state like Wisconsin, President Obama could have beaten Mitt Romney by over 200,000 popular votes, but when it came time for the electoral college, Obama and Romney would split Wisconsin's electoral votes, five to five. Expand this to the national level and Obama would have finished 2012 with 5 million more popular votes than Romney, but Obama still would have lost the election thanks to gerrymandered districts.

Gov. Scott Walker recently said he was intrigued by the notion of Wisconsin divvying up its electoral votes by congressional district, but that he had not made up his mind on whether to back the idea. So redraw districts to ensure more of one party's districts and bingo you never lose a single election.

Gotta love Politics . Still think an individuals vote actually counts?

When it's winner-take-all, a lot of popular votes don't count.  it should definitely be by district, if only to stop mandates.

Preibus is often off base, but in this case he is entirely correct.  "Winner-take-all" is a crooked scam and should never have been introduced.  Here in the People's Republik of NY we are continually shafted, as happens in many states.
Over half the population is clustered in the large cities..less than half is spread across the rest of the state.  City and country folk most often vote in contrary patterns, but since it is "winner-take-all" the country folks votes never get counted.
By attributing the votes to the way people actually voted, would come closest to having every vote count.  It is about time the sleeping Republicans woke up and demanded honesty in the elective process.

I agree with Ironglow, and I see it every election in NY, I vote but might as well stay home as NYC carries the state.

Yep that's why by district is wrong . Gerrymander the district , rig the game.

Wrong.  the cities are the hide-outs for liberals and other assorted parasites. look at Chicago, my brother in southern ILL never gets his vote to count.

For the life of me, I don't know why anyone would not be in favor of this. Why when a election is 47% to 53% should all of the electoral votes go to one candidate? Just makes sense, and it's done in other states, so what is the big deal???
Other than that it would change election results.... Oh how I wish they would have done this earlier.....................

Voting by district is NOT wrong. If a state's popular vote goes 51 to 49%, why should one candidate get 100% of the electoral votes?
