Lots of questions from a newbie
« on: January 16, 2013, 04:25:15 AM »
I discovered this site when I started researching a gun I got from a great uncle when he passed.  Awesome site with lots of info, greatly appreciate the wealth of knowledge available here.  Question 1)  I have a NEF 30-06 and I would like to mount a Nikon Prostaff 3x9x50.  What rings would you suggest?  Question 2). Would like to change from walnut to synthetic.   Will Choate stocks work?  Are they good quality?  Question 3)  Would like to get a 45-70 barrel.  From research, looks like my gun is a 1996 production model.  Will the factory do a swap on this gun?  Thanks in advance, Derek

Welcome Drock15,

Ya gotta read Handi Basics 101 and the FAQs.  Both at the top of the page.

Number 1, I'm not familiar with the Prostaff, but lots of others here are.  They'll be along to help.  #2, Choates will work fine and yes they are good.  #3,  No, the factory will not fit a .45-70 barrel to that frame, but you can.  I'd look for one here in the classifieds and fit it myself.  There's lots of help here for that.  Below is the factory poop from the FAQs.

I don't know what you mean by a factory swap.  If you mean barrel for barrel or rifle for rifle the answer is no.

Best of luck.  Stick around and ask.  We'll help.

Pete

I was referring to sending my gun in and having a 45-70 barrel fitted to my frame.  It is an SB2 frame, but serial starts with NL.  Looking at there website, looks they would not fit a 45-70, just a shotgun/black powder or original 30-06.  Would they fit a 45-70 if I send it in?

I answered that question above.  No, they will not fit a .45-70 barrel to that frame.

Drock15,

I think you missed petemi's answer to your question.

Pete...

If you want a 45-70 barrel on your great uncle's gun, all you have to do is buy a 45-70 barrel from the classifieds and put it on your receiver yourself.  It's not hard to fit a barrel.  If your lucky, it'll snap right in, without any fitting.

The Nikon Prostaff is a great scope, I would recommend any brand named rings, Walmart has Weaver's which are good.  Just make sure you buy "high" rings, otherwise, the hammer or hammer extension might hit the ocular bell of the scope.

My quandary, I personally, don't think I have enough Handi's but, I know I have more Handi's than I really need or should have.

Don't you believe a word of the above!!!!!!! ::)   The real danger is not just barrels, BUT then you  want spare receivers and then more barrels, then more reloading materials, then you'll start to want to go for "specialty" bores and mods. Man, this is just such an insidious disease  :o :o :o :o ;D

Thanks guys!  Already bought my first new handi.  45-70 synthetic, really awesome little gun.  Gonna finish this deer season with the open sight, but thinking about 2-7x32 for next year.  Anyone else tried this combo?  Also thought sending it in to the factory this spring/summer to get an extra barrel.  Is the 35 Remington or whelen still available?
