A coffee
« on: January 16, 2013, 05:28:41 AM »
This whole thing with boutique coffees reminds me a lot of Tulip Mania, when tulip bulbs were more valuable than gold until people realized that they had no real value.

Today we have boutique coffees based on beans digested by civets or elephants, or other critters, and they get the big bucks for this crappucino.

I heard about the hunt for the "god shot" of coffee, which is a drink of the best and most flavorful coffee imaginable and connoiseurs who get one are amazed and impressed.

I thought that was ridiculous until, this morning, I had some office coffee. It was the first sip of coffee I had had in quite a while, and it was brewed of high quality coffee, though probably not elephant dung or civet droppings. Dang, that was good! It just hit me as being delicious and amazing.

I think I had a "god shot" today.

Here's what I mean by "crappucino"

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/10/15/elephant-dung-coffee-black-ivory_n_1968096.html

Mmmm. Mellow bean!

And it's not just the poop aspect. It's the fact that somebody has to pick through it to get the beans out. I've heard of entry level jobs, this must be an "exit level" job.

Of course, I can't prove it by scripture, but in Heaven "The River of Life" alternately flows from Diet Coke to Coffee ( Tanzania Peaberry-non monkey/elephant enhanced) ...I'm pretty sure..... ;D

yes they cost less but useful anyway on your garden.  if fact, I'd buy oat manure before I'd buy crappucino.

There was a program on one of the cable channels that followed a coffee buyer to countries where that trip could end up as the last one, ever for the fellow.

Sadly I cannot find it now but it was very interesting.

He would buy and roast the green beans of non-standard species of coffee trees; some of the local band or tribes men knew the value of their beans being bought in bulk but still did not get even close to giving away the few beans he bought to roast.
In his tasting of one type, most of the show was about trying to get where he was going alive, anyway he said it was good coffee but Americans would never accept it as not what they expect, much less will accept coffee to taste like.

During the past ten years, I have spent more hours trying to find rare coffees pre-roasted but while there is a lot of talk of rare types, especially in Africa, getting some is a rare as hens-teeth.
I did get some excellent Philippine coffee but when I tried to re-order they were out of business due to import problems.

If you truly like coffee and want to get some that is different and extremely hard to find try Trung Nyugen coffee shop, they have the civet coffee, which I will never ever buy, but more importantly others you can get no where else.

i started to post that i could not
believe that folks would buy or
consume anything picked out of
the solid waste of an animal, but
thinking now on who the nation
put back in the main chair, i'm
not surprised that folks get in line
to drink the cup of b.s.

i'm thinking of the movie "mountain men"
with charlton heston and brian keith where
they're sitting around smoking with their
friend medicine wolf. charlton heston's
character bill tyler says " what's in this
tobacco medicine wolf ? it tastes like
buffalo sh*t. " medicine wolf says " it is. . ."

Couple years back someone told me about "cold brewed" coffee. I figured it was just some goofy fad but I tried it at his urging.

Long story short, it's all I drink at home now. Super easy to prepare with a French press and makes even cheap coffee taste great. Using good coffee with this method yields the best cup of joe I've ever had.

Now, I am a certified coffee addict. I drink it when I can't go to sleep (there is truth in that statement folks.)
Sometime a cup of coffee just hits the spot---especially good.
I don't know about the source/sources or what is in it, where it comes from or what witchcrat it goes thru to become coffee---I like it in a mug and hot.
I evenused to like that ol home brew dark roast with chickory Community.

That's strange since it has caffeine, but I've noticed that my first cup in the morning makes my eyes kinda heavy.  any ideas why it affects us like that??

I hate cats, so I'd probably puke over civet poop coffee.
elephant poop coffee?  I'd have to think about it. elephants are one of my favorite animals.
it might be like changing your kids diaper, that's not too bad, but somebody else's kid, never.
so I might consider elephant poop coffee.

I've found an instant that's not too bad.  folgers dark roast.

I don't know what it is about me and coffee. I started drinnking coffee when I was younger than one in my bottle with milk.
I am also almost immune to pain killers and anesthesia..Percodan, and most codine stuff (less it is in big doses) just don't effect/affect me. I wake up when under anesthesia - often. That makes the doctors a little agitated.
I warn doctors when I have a colonostomy that I am resistant and they just grin and say that they know what is going on---when Iwake up a tell I can feel it--they rush around to find something stronger. i woke while they were removing my cataracks (sp).
The coffee just relaxes me----no, Ihave never had any of the stuff ya'll been talking about---that I know of---who knows what was in that old dark roast Community stuff besodes chickory.

I have a daughter in law that will pay $5.00 for a cup of Starbucks or what ever that particular shop is selling as "special coffee". As for myself and my wife, make it Folgers breakfast roast or what ever the hell they call it.
I like it in the mornin, and that is almost a must. The rest of the day? Not so much.

LOL, I didn't start that young.  but as a little feller, my grandpa would put a little butter in a cup of coffee and curmble crackers in and I would eat it with a spoon.  he would have the same and then a regular cup.  so needless to say, if I don't get my morning coffee, stay out of my way.
my wife says a coke will do the same thing, wrong...

I have a bit of a loathing for the large chain coffee shops, as I used to frequent more than a handful of private ones and they are all gone now thanks to Caribou more than Starbucks.
I will go to one on occasion but I always look for the private ones if I can.

One of my favorite old private coffee shops used to sell, pre-made Turkey sandwiches wrapped in sealed plastic. Now that often makes me pass on it but I tried one once and it was  the best over the counter sandwich I ever had. I would go miles out of my way just to get one.
Of course that shop is gone now and I have not seen one anywhere else.

TJ Max of all places, is now more of a higher dollar clearance store and one can get some very high buck coffee beans there for reasonable prices, along with a few other foods you usually only see in specialty shops, including some darn fine cook wear.

We actually have cafe here in Deer Park---old time cafe---you can get breakfast, coffee and smoke a cig and have conversation.
In my days in Livingston, Texas was a pretty well know little cafe on Hwy 59--downtown---remember when Hwy's use to go thru town---The White Kitchen Cafe. You could smoke and drink coffee.
Now this is not a person many here will relate too.
Zimy Foreman was a Lawyer---his most famous brother was Percy Foreman, also a lawyer--Zimy had a stiff leg from a gunshot while he was in the army back in the teens---it was a race riot in Houston.
He would come in---prop the stiff leg up on a chair and roll a cig and drink coffee and hold court (so to speak).
Memories.

Try not cleaning your coffee pot for about five years. ;D

My mother who is nearly 99 and with full blown dementia said one day we were with her that she was an addict. I asked "an addict to what?" Her reply was; "to coffee, it's not just for breakfast anymore" as she fell asleep with her coffee cup in her hand.
