A baaaad idea? Fort Bragg to stop using goats in medical training  Published January 15, 2013

Not everyone is mad at Congress: Thousands of goats per year will be spared now that lawmakers have passed a law ending the killing of goats for Army medical training.
For years, Fort Bragg has shot, blown up and otherwise killed some 300 goats per month to train Army medics for treating wounded soldiers, according to the Fayetteville Observer. Documents show Fort Bragg's Army Special Operations Command requested up to 3,600 goats last year. Animal activists claim the goats are shot, stabbed, bludgeoned and blown up to simulate the types of injuries those in combat face, according to the newspaper.
But the new law appears to be the end of the practice, which angered animal rights activists. Instead, medics may train on humans wearing "organ suits," which have simulated human organs, breakable synthetic bones and even bloodlike fluid.

The recently passed National Defense Authorization Act requires the Department of Defense to provide plans by March to replace animals that are currently used for medical training, The Fayetteville Observer reported.
Officials with the John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School and Army Special Operations Command wouldn't tell the newspaper how they plan to replace animals or say how many are killed during training.

I took a group of students that are planning on medical careers to the med center at McConnell AFB in Wichita. The chief medical officer there said that at least in the AF the doctors spend a period of time in inner city hospital emergency room to obtain this kind of experience. Just curious, why goats? I thought pigs closer mimicked human wounds. Maybe easier to care for. PETA could offer themselves instead. ;D

why not barbeque the remains.  or the pig suggestion is good, they are better that goats, and I have eaten both.

Local abundance of cheap goats?

Nah. That can't be it. It implies cost savings.

Probably some general with a brother in law who farms goats.

I have only had goat a few times that has been either pit BBQ or smoked. Not bad at all. Not as good as pork but better than mutton IMHO.

Goats do not really have the will to live like a human or pig. They are much smaller and basically man portable where as a pig isn't always as docile.

The goat farm used to be the place where you got the best medics.

Well it does give new meaning to the old expression "go blow a goat".  ;D
The story of David & Goliath only demonstrates the superiority of ballistic projectiles over hand weapons, poor old Goliath never had a chance.

gotta disagree about the mutton.  I love it along with lamb chops.  we have a restaurant here that serves all kinds of meat, all you can eat.  if you haven't been to one, the waiters roam the floor with the meat on spits and long carving knives, and the meat is cooked in big glass ovens where you can see it.  I can eat all the lambchops I want.  but for me and the wife, it's over $200 with the tip.  we don't go often.  however, we're going on a cruise in April and the ship has a restaurant like that with only a $25 surcharge per person.
but for goat, I've only had it BBQed and was good.
people who eat venison should like either one.

They started going to ERs years ago. Cheaper in the long run and as real as it gets.
