With a 480 MSRP its a little rich for what it LOOKS like. I'm interested, 22Mag has such a alure for me...  ::)

Any one buy one or know anything or handle one yet?

Afraid it wouldn't be worth that much to me!  For that kind of money you could have an original model 24.  Not positive, but I think it's imported from Turkey, or wherever.
 
I like the concept, but not the execution.  Take off the gaudy red trim and the stupid angled recoil pad, and cut the price in half and it might sell - at least that's what it would take to tempt me!

Agree and that was my first thoughts too. ::)

I have begun looking for a older perf beat up but functional example. I see a lot more 22M/20ga than 410.

I dunno at this point I'm just thinking out load and am attracted to anything 22 mag for some reason. ;)

I walked into the local Gander Mountain and Lo and Behold was a model 42 in the rack. I picked it up right away. It is light, looks cheap, but does not feel cheap. It seemed solid to me. It was a 22 Long Rifle/410. I was thinking about getting it. A couple of things held me back. First, I think there is no choke on the 410 barrel, but not sure about it. Second the 22 rim fire. If it was a 357 over a 20 gauge with screw in chokes, it would have been mine. Even a 22 Mag over a 20 gauge would work. I am not sure if they have shipped any 22 Magnums yet.

I just saw 1 at Gander Mountain.  Long Rifle on top, 410 cylinder bore on the bottom.  I have an H&R Sporter in Long Rifle, and a Pardner Youth in 410.
 
So why in the hell do I feel like I MUST HAVE THIS GUN :o !!!  I'm desperately trying to contact my practical side, but it seems to have left for the day.  Oh well, here we go again...

I sure like the concept.  I had one of the original 22lr / 20ga models when I was a kid.  Great all around woods gun for small game.  This one though, could they have made it more ugly?..... :-\

Some may say that this Savage is ugly, and that is their right to do so. Let me offer up some thing to think about.



Here is a 200 yard group from this ugly rifle. About .375 MOA



I do not notice what the gun looks like when I am sighting down the scope/sights. The results are what counts, not what it looks like. Someone once said that the only interesting rifle is an accurate one. I think function trumps looks, but that is my opinion.

The model 42 does not look as good as a model 24 in my opinion too. However, it is lighter than a model 24 and I bet it will serve it's purpose very well. If it were a 357 over a 20 gauge, it would have been under my arm as I went out the door.

I whole-heartely agree with everything you said.  And just because the model 42 won't win a beauty contest certainly does'nt mean that I'm not already plotting to get 1.  Still can't get past the cool factor of this little gun 8) .

we have several late 40's to 50's model 24 versions on this rifle.
and comparing them to today's rifle..... looks are much cheaper, and toy-like.
but as far as tha best known secret goes......its accurate as hell !!!! jus like its fathers.
i had to get 2 of these new designs to accomodate there family tree that i have for my grandson's.

I know how you feel.  My dad bought a model 24 in 1970 and I remember it like yesterday.  When he got it home from the Western Auto and opened the box, my 5 year old eyes thoght it had to be the prettiest gun in the world.
 
The high luster blue of the 20" barrels contrasts perfectly with the engraved nickel receiver.  And the checkered walnut forend and Monte Carlo stock with the white line spacer and grip cap is still gorgeous to me in spite of a couple of dings so tiny that only I know where to find them.
 
The gun is a 22 magnum over a 2.75" chambered 20 gauge barrel, and will be passed on to my son.  Just 2 years ago, a man offered to trade me a DPMS A-3 that he'd bought new and never taken out of the box.  Who knows, with the current value of anything AR, I probably did him a favor by turning him down ;D .

 I was looking at these again today...  I havent seen a Mag version yet, I just may have to have my guy order one up for me... 

I though and thought about opening my 24 to magnum... Dunno I aint saving it for anyone, I just dont feel right doing it...



Anyone know of a serial number listing for dates of manufacture for the 24 series?

I got a call from a friend yesterday... He has a deposit on a nice 24 S-E in 22M/410 for me!!

He dosen't have pics yet to share, BUT the cost is $350!!! (+ shipping to me)

I am excited because as Doc pointed out, these older ones are much nicer then the modern plastic...

Pics when I get them if everything works out!

My first gun was a Savage 24, in 22RF over .410.  A 410 is a poor gun for a beginner, too hard to hit things with it.  Plus 410s are loaded hot in comparison with 20ga shells.  That gun was lost in a house fire, I did not cry one bit over it.  I now own two 24s, one is a .223 over 20ga, the other is a .22mag over 20ga.  I might get a .22RF over 20ga is I come across one, but not in the least interested in a .410.

I really like the .223/20ga, great for calling.  If Savage was to make their new one in something other than 410 I could get interested.

Unfortuneately that deal fell thru... the dealer would not ship it to my FFL... He was in MO, I'm in CT.  Should have been a noon issue, but this guy would not do it...

OH well, There will be others....

I know what you mean Roger. For me this 410 is used as a rifle with shot... not used for anything on the wing but for squirrels or rabbits in a tree or brush or leaves. Works very well for that! If I have a clear view and they are still, I shoot them with the RF Otherwise I let loose with 11/16oz of shot! LOL
