Got it
« on: January 16, 2013, 01:59:41 PM »
I called Al's guns in Verboort, OR today and bought a .45-70 Handi over the phone for $169 plus $10 for the idiotic Oregon transfer tax.

I've got to much going on to pick it up before Saturday and these few days are going to seem long...

Now to get some brass, dies and a bullet mold...

Crap that's cheap! I just paid $300 shipped for a used one since I couldn't find one in a store new up here in Canada.

Congradulations! I would think that is a good price also.    Approx. 7" length of lead filled 3/4" pipe w/little rubber piece on each end in the stock bolt hole will tame that light rifle if you want heavy loads.     Enjoy

Did I ever typo that.  It's new and it was $269 not $169....  I can't type and I can't spell, some days I can't talk either.  :)

Probably still a good deal.  I put a Handi grip on mine just because I had it, and noticable recoil tamer over PW MC with factory pad.  Filled the stock with rice in plastic bags, mostly to rebalance to the rear.  If you can handle the stock shape... I like it.

The tried to raise it to $30 a couple years ago then the sate legislators started a moment to disband the Oregon back ground checks and go to the fed's system that is free.  They backed down real quick from the price increase.

I picked it up today.  I had to help a friend in the city with a computer problem and it was a no-brainer to stop and pick it up on the way.  There was a 40 minute wait for the Oregon background check.  I suppose Saturday wasn't a good time to get a gun and there were probably 5k other guys buying a gun today..

My only disappointment is it has a synthetic stock rather than pallet wood but I can live with that especially since it has the nicest trigger I've ever experienced on a Handi.  I don't have a scale but I'd guess it's around 2.5~3 pounds and crisp.  I wish my other 2 had triggers this nice.  I suppose I should have asked about the stock but I forgot to ask and it was more concerned about getting one with iron sights.

I'm kinda broke and while I should have waited, I have it here to fondle until can pony up the bux for some ammo and reloading stuff.
