local walmarts have the sb1 .357 handi. do i want one?
« on: January 17, 2013, 02:27:15 AM »
they are the plastic stocked/scope rail iteration. i'd love to have an iron-sighted one, but i could add sights to a naked handi. does this version shoot well? can the sb1 frame handle the maximum ream/loads?
thanks.

We just got our maxis (4) So I cant tell you much but I have read it over and over that they can be put on SB1 as long as you are keeping the loads safe and not going off the charts... The (old) factory offered Max on the Pre-SB1 case hardened frames back in the day.   Most I read about are going SB2 just so they never even have to think about it.       thejanitor

I've kept all my pistol caliber Handis on SB2 frames, but that's just me.  Lots of folks here have Maxis on SB1s.  I don't know how hot they load them, it's something I don't have to worry about.  Factory level maxi loads on the SB1 are fine.  Hotter, I'd go to SB2.

There is nothing wrong with an SB1 frame. Just stay within its design specs and you will be fine. The SB1 frame should not be feared, it makes a great shotgun or pistol caliber platform.

If you are going to be doing a lot of switch barrel stuff and not sure what you are going to put on your frame, cut to the chase and go the SB2 route as suggested.

no switched barrel stuff unless it'd be a shotgun barrel. i have a handi in .30-06, so i am fixed up in a centerfire rifle chambering.
the .357 handi is especially intriguing because i have a smith model 10 in .38 special ...

The 357 Handi is one of those great ones in my opinion. If you are a reloader you have one of the most versatile guns you could ask for. You can plink with light 38s, target shoot and shooting at 300 yards would be about like shooting at 1000 yards. It is great for practicing, training and very cheap to shoot. You can step up to the 357 magnum with no problem and hunt deer under proper conditions. I shoot alot of 38s through the one my daughter stold from me. We both enjoy it alot. We can spend several hours ringing the gongs at our gun range. We play different shooting games and easily get lost in day shooting. The down side is we have been late for dinner a couple of times.

I am looking to get another so I have one that doesn't have a pink stock on it.

You will be fine with the SB1.  With that barrel from the factory, it will have a small firing pin, and the pressures on the Max are well within the limitations.  As a matter of fact, look at the pressures in you load manuals between the mag and max...you might be surprised!
