I hada misfire yesterday... what could be the cause. I had loaded up some rounds to help break in a new barrel.
win case ,primers with imr 4350  I hand loaded
I fired off 32 rounds out of my NEF .243. all but one went Bang? :confused:

It was out of the middle of my run same as all the rest. I tried it more then once :sad:
I have puled the load apart dumped the powder and now  have a case witha live primer in it ...well it has a fireing pin mark on it. I check the seating depth its at .007 I had set up to do um at .005
Not sure what the reason it miss fired Just know i did not like it:confused:
What now ? can i safly press it out? any advice is helpful

It could be a number of things.  Bad primer, bad primer pocket (too loose, too deep), primer hole blocked, or moisture got to it.  I wouldn't worry about the one round which failed to fire.  I would mark the case and reused it again.  If you continue to have a problem with that particular case, I would just trash it.

Yes, you can safely press it out.  It isn't recommended, but I've even done it with a live primer.  Just don't slam it out, press down on it slowly.  It will come out easily.  If you find a piece of corn cob or other media material coming out with the primer, that may have been the problem.  Then check the primer hole, for an obstruction, tho after pressing out the primer, there shouldn't be anything blocking the hole.

You can press the primer out, the key is slowly press it out.  It sounds like a big deal until you have done a few.  I always put on the eye protection and muffs, just in case.

As for the misfire, I don't know how you could do a diagnosis on 1 misfire.  Sometimes primers just don't go bang.  I always spin the round on a misfire so it strikes in another spot, they usually go off but some don't.

If you have several misfires you have a problem, just one I don't worry about it.

 good idea on marking the case. they are new  1st time loaded up. I have had  these primers for a while now so I am wondering if  that was the case.
 so long as it is not the gun to blam  ;D

I've de-primed live primers without ever having one go bang, as said wear proper safety gear just in case and maybe turn the opening shell holder away from you, if it does go bang you might need a clean pair of shorts :o

If you have a live primer you want to remove, soak it with WD-40 and that will de-activate the priming compound. I've done several like that with no problems. Still be careful though.

 even with the misfire It was a good day shooting my new 243 and from a shoot and clean shoot and clean point of view .. I like  it .. :)

If ya haven't already done so, I'd try sliding the empty case in question into the chamber and make sure it isn't going in too deep. Make sure it's flush on the chamber face with a good straight edge.

From time to time I come across factory brass that is a wee tad too long and needs the be sized & bump the shoulder back, so I'd not be surprized if one would be too short.

Don't count on it, depends on whose primer you use, works on Federal 210GM, but doesn't work worth a hoot on Winchester LR.

 Out of 50 new cases 5 were too long and 3 were and min case length Most all fell right at 2 .035 to 2.037
this case was in the mix of the norm  but that dont mean the head may be off..

Maybe you are just unlucky with a FTF primer 'bad from the box"; its gotta happen sometime, doesnt it? Ive carefullly pressed good primers back out of bad cases, re-used them with no problem and pressed out some FTF (no surprise) in old ammo that were f-pin dented with no issues.
FWIW, I have a Lee hand press with the universal decap die which works great to step outside away from the bench for something like this; dont want to scare the dog, you know.

Heck the dog dont mind it was the wife that was havein issues.. Told her i was going to press it out and it may go bang... dont be alarmed if you here it... boy glad i did let her know , hate to think what she would have done  if it did go off... >:(   may have grounded me ..lol
