painting a handi barrel silver
« on: January 18, 2013, 12:36:28 PM »
saw that krylon has some high heat satin silver paint. was thinking of trying it on a handi with the black laminate stock set. any idea how it would hold up or the process used if anyone has tried it. primer needed? any type of top coat to keep from scratching. any info would be great. I saw the two post in the faq but none discussed the barrel itself[

Ive used polycrylic from minwax on metal many times, but i spray it. a light wet coat and then air dry and then bake with heat lamp, then a light scuff with 600 or finer in one stroke. tack off and then spray your color. when its dry give two light coats of polycrylic over the silver. let dry and then bake. you should be able to walk on it and not scratch it.

if it gets real wet for an extended period, it will turn milky, but this goes away when redried.  Ive got it on my wood countertops for 25 years and no scratch or peel, only the milky white if allowed to get soaked.

I can finish it in silver cerakote for about $65, if you pay shipping both ways. You wont easily hurt that finish unless you sandblast it or shoot it.
