House Republican leaders plan to raise debt ceiling
 
The move Friday by Republican leaders, who have been holed up for days at an annual retreat at a snow-dusted private resort in Virginia, is a turnaround for the party. Until recently, Republicans had touted the debt ceiling as a prime point of leverage they could use in their battle with Obama over spending.
But House Speaker John A. Boehner of Ohio and other members of the leadership have been warning their restive members that a fight over the debt ceiling risked harm to the economy for which Republicans probably would receive the blame. They have been looking for a way to sidestep a battle that they feared could further damage the party's standing with voters.

Yeah, like the Dumycrats don't want the debt limit raised.  This is the House Republicans at least being willing to negotiate a serious and longer term solution to a problem that is not going away if it is ignored.  Tell us about how responsible the Dems in the Senate have been.

Article says that it is unconstitutional to freeze Senators pay until a budget passes.  How about freezing and withholding the pay of ALL civilian govt. workers in Washington.  Yes all of obummers staff in the white house also.  Lets see michelle get her *** in the kitchen and cook, clean the WH, etc.  BTW if she needs food she'll have to walk with no security as they will be furloughed also.

If things go bad, it's the Republicans fault.  If things go right, it will be reported that the administration prevailed over Republican stonewalling.  The white house press office will spin a story and the mainstream media will tout it to the stars as the "truth".

the dems wont allow any spending cuts so there really is no other choice. if they dont raise the limit then the goverment will go into sequestration,which as i understand it, is a 20% across the board cut in all spending. that would mean some of the moochers wont get their checks. oh the horror!!!

It's too late to matter now anyway, no way we can sustain and pay back the debt so let er rip.

This is a common refrain that is not true.  I'm not saying that all Republicans are worthy of the title, but to say that they on average are anywhere near the same as Dumycrats is a far stretch.


However, you might well be right that it is too late to save the country from total economic calamity, but we can only hope that there are at least a few Dumycrats that have some sliver of common sense left.  I actually saw Kent Conrad (D) on television a couple of days ago agreeing with a Republican that the federal government must cut spending.

mechanic's refrain is absolutely true when it comes to spending. Bush had a Republican house and senate for 6 out of his 8 years as president and racked up an additional 4.9 trillion in debt. Trying to sugar coat that fact is a far stretch.

The current Republican house could at least stop the bleeding but as the OP posted, they are going right along with Obama. These are the same Republicans who went along with Obama on taxing our income an additional 2%.
