Very interesting.  Looked it up on:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Athens_(1946).  Food for thought.

more interesting that the Wikipedia reference was unavailable--either removed or changed.

Everyday folks rising up against wealthy overlords? I support it. How do you rightys justify it, since the situation in those towns was a very good example of the gerrymandering the right has done throughout the south for over 100 years?

eugenes' wiki link redirects you to the correct wiki link.

You think we would have grown up hearing about that.

this wasn't gerrymandering  it was ballot stuffing or miscounting

The conflict was a direct result of the Cantrell family gerrymandering the county to negate opposing votes, just like the entire south has been gerrymandered by Republican governors to counter Democrat votes.

CDQ ,
Please provide proof.  In my state the gerrymandered districts were created by democrats to insure the election of democratic candidates.  My district is 178 miles long, and only 10 feet wide in places created by democrats, and has always had a democraic representative.

The correct wiki link talks about the state changing the districts (possible gerrymandering) but does not mention the Cantrell's influence on the re-districting. Sounds like the Cantrells definitely figured out how to use it to their advantage.

LOL, you must be from Georgia. we have a district like that created by democrats.
CDQ seldom has anything to back up his accusations.

I ALWAYS have evidence to back up my statements. Some are not capable of understanding that facts do not have bias. And yes, both parties use gerrymandering to their advantage. In most places the redistricting is pretty well balanced, but in the south it's been weighted towards the Republicans since nearly back to the Civil War. I don't know about Georgis, but Tennessee, for instance, has been Republican controlled since I was born. When I moved away, 13 years ago, most Tennesseans were Democrats. The state was about 4 million people, but over 2 million lived in the Memphis area. Because of the districting, the Democrats never had a chance in most elections. Why do you think southern rightys are so adamant that "this is a republic?" Because, if it were a real democracy, they wouldn't have a chance.
If you give up, THEY don't have to win.

A real democracy? You mean majority rules and no Constitution? No bill of rights to protect us from government overreach? So in your mind "Rightys" are responsible for the freedom we enjoy in this country! A real breakthrough here. CDQ gets It!

An interesting time. Our local library found a copy of the book about it I could check out and read. Can't recommend it too much. It is why owning a gun is important for both conservatives and liberals. Human nature can lead any of us, oth liberals and conservatives, to become authoritarian. Ànd, sometimes only a gun can make authoritarian's back down.

Problem is its usually authoritarians are backed with a 20 man swat team . 20 to one odds .

This one is easy to call bullsh*t.  Gerrymandering has NO effect on statewide elections, only district wide elections.  If there were more democraps in Tennessee than repubicans, Tennessee would not keep voting for republican presidents.  So, how about those facts?

There is a movie about this event. I found the following on U-tube, but there are a few more sources one could look for in search engines if anyone wants to watch it from a different source.

I remember watching it some years ago & thought it was OK.

ChungDoQuan was banned a very long time ago so no, they won't reply to you, not under that name at least. I do not see any reason given for the ban and I don't recall if it was me or someone else who banned them so I don't recall why.

I do have some vague recollection of them being a trouble maker of some sort. Anyone coming in with that name you'd kind of expect to not fit in wouldn't ya?

Here is a link to his last posts before the ban if anyone wants to take a look. Seems to have departed here in July of 2013. That was before we sold the original site.
