got a new thumper today
« on: January 19, 2013, 09:27:01 AM »
went in the local gunshop and they had a brand new in the box rem 700 bdl in 300 ultramag. Couldnt leave without it. Found a trade the gunshop was happy with so didnt even have to put out any cash. took it home pealed the sights off of it and put it in a cdl stock i had bought for a project i never did. Looks pretty good. Had to chuckle though. He had 4 boxes of factory ammo that the guy traded with it. I got them as part of the deal. Figured id pull them down for the brass if nothing else. Got to looking at them and they were reduced recoil rounds. Supposidly equivelent to a 308. Now ive got to shake my head at anyone who buys a gun like that and buys ammo like that to feed it. No doubt the guy bought it and probably got sweaty palms just touching it  ;)

it was probably never loaded or fired.
a good while back, i was surprised to
find out there is a whole bunch of situations
like that where folks have bought firearms
or put together ar's and never put any
rounds through them. i knew of a guy that
bought a street bike that he'd never ridden.
went and got it with a trailer, unloaded it
in his garage, and never took it out. polished
it every now and then.
18 MINUTES.  . . . . . .

Maybe some 120 grain cast bullets at about 1400 fps.?  Would make a nice rabbit gun..... ::)

Seriously, sounds like a great "reach out and touch em" rifle.  Have you seen the prices on factory ammo in that caliber?  Just the free ammo / brass is a score.

That thing is a kicker......

dont have a scope yet but just wanted to see how it felt so i shot two rounds of the factory full power 180 stuff that i unbelieveably found at the local hardware store. To compare it i took out my 300 wby vanguard and my bdl 8mag. the 300 is the heaviest of the 3. Its a vanguard with a boyt laminate stock. the 8mag is a bdl in a cdl stock with a 3x9 luepold on it. It only has a 24 inch barrel so the weight is probably fairly close to this ultra with its 26 inch barrel in a cdl stock. The 300 wby was shooting the handload i use the utilizes a 180 tsx. the 8mag was loaded with 200 partitions. Recoil of the ultra and the 8mag were so close that if  you were blindfolded id bet you couldnt tell the diffrence. 300wby was a little lighter but not much. the ultra wasnt as bad as i thought it would be from reading all the horror storys about them.  Dont get me wrong. I dont mind shooting a gun at this level one bit as a matter of fact i kind of enjoy it but will be the first to admit you dont want to go and shoot a 100 rounds in a day. The guns i consider fun and that i will take out each year and try about 20 differnt loads in the just to play end with the 300 win. My wby and my 8mag have a good load for them and its the load ill use till i die. I will no doubt do the same with this gun. Hopefully it will shoot a partition or a tsx well and i wont have to fool much with it.

That rifle sounds like fun, to me...  Expensive (bigger appetite for powder than some, lol) but fun...  I'm kind of envious, as .30-'06 recoil in an 8 pound gun is about all I can handle nowadays.  Twenty-some years ago, though, I'd think nothing of running a hundred rounds or more through my No.1 in .300 Weatherby that I had, and I'd be grinning like a Cheshire cat with every squeeze of the trigger.  I always wanted to try the .300 Ultra just because.....  "Ultra" seems an apt description.
Congrats and enjoy!
What are you going to scope it with?
