44 Mag plinker loads?
« on: January 19, 2013, 11:46:32 AM »
So my plan for my next handi was to get another 357 mag to make a maxi so I could have one with a peep sight, my main hunting maxi is scoped.  I want a plinker I can use with 38's and also as a backup to my main rig.  I have a 44 Mag barrel and a SB1 frame sitting around taking up space and I'm wondering if I can get the 44 mag to be my peep sighted plinker and backup rig.  Can I download the 44 Mag to around 357 Mag recoil levels for a 75 yard or so plinker?  I don't cast so I'll probably get platted bullets.

Any thoughts will be appreciated.

Use 44 Special starting load data and you'll have some nice plinkers.

I have been using 7.5 grains of Unique and a 240-250 grain cast for a lot of years as a plinker load. if you want to hunt with it, you might want to bump up the Unique to 9.0 grains or so. In Lyman's 49th starting load is 10.0 grains of Unique for 1332 fps for a rifle, but I know for a fact that you can go under that safely, depending on what you want to do.
