Quick range trip today...
« on: January 19, 2013, 04:07:49 PM »
Mostly for a couple Marlins as I need to work up two new loads.

Lil Gun and a 357Mag using XTP FP 158G bullets. I forgot the chrono... CRS sucks. ;)  :o ::)   BUT I did get a bit of cratering but other wise normal primer. The Marlin does have a large FP hole, so I guess I better not go hotter no matter what the vel is.

But the 454 came with me too as it got new Burris rings, I was worried about the Leupold rings as it has a sharp recoil. My 32g H110 loading with a 300 GD HP was SPOT ON at 50...

I shot those five and put it back in the case...  ::) ;)

Ya know, there's one big advantage of leaving the chrony home.....ya can't put a bullet through it :o ::)

Just curious Brian.  What was the other Marlin at the range?

The other thought I had....what would happen if you used a slower powder like 1680 or RL7 in both the .357 and the .454.  Could they cut pressure in the .357, reduce recoil in the .454 and perhaps give better velocity in both?  Don't know, just askin'.  The problem I have most with the pistol calibers is that most data is just for that...pistols...burn it all in a 6.5 inch barrel.

Good morning my friend,
I worked up a loading with the 225g FTX 45 cal bullet in my 45 Colt rifles. I have two Marlins in this caliber. A std 1894 and a LTD with a 16'' barrel. The powder I am using is SR4759. It meters like mud... but shoots tight groups!  :o

RL7 would be too bulky and too slow for the small 357Mag case. In the 454 I am sure something could be said, I doubt you could get enough in to get good velocities. I love RL7 in my 375 Marlin, but even there I am shooting compressed loads and get no pressure signs.

Havent thought to look at AA1680... its great in the Maxi I am sure it would also be in the 454 maybe the Mag too... Food for thought.

The third Marlin is a real beauty, W/AAA grade walnut stocks. I need to shoot more... Its a custom stocked 1894 357 mag. I want to see what vel I can get out of the LIL gun/XTP-FP combo. I have read close to 2k many times. Just wanna see for my self.  ;)

In the 454, I haven't loaded many different powders as this loading was such a good shooter, as you can see, I simply never felt the need. ;)

That 454 is a shooter for sure!  After a group like that I'd put it back in the case too!

Too cold here for me to do any shooting - forecast is high about 10 degrees today and around 0 for tomorrow.  Glad to see someone's out having fun though.

Don't feel lonely Spruce.  The forecast is the same here with Snow.  It's gonna hover around zero all week with wind and snow.  I talked to George in San Angelo this morning and they were in the thirties.  I guess Al Gore strikes again ::)

I wouldn't have put the .454 away after those five shots... I'd have shot it until the ammo ran out and then ran home and posted the top five groups on GBO!  ;D
Pete/Spruce... we are at -24 C and digging out from a foot and a half of snow last night... to day was supposed to be a range day... after reloading most of yesterday... ain't gonna happen!  :(

Good Morning Pete!  I don't have an answer for you, but know RL7 has been used in the 45 colt for some very heavy loads.  Western Powders distributes the Accurate brand and have been very quick to answer any questions I have e-mailed to them.  The main guy I talked with is no longer there, but others will help you.  1680 is used for full house loads as well as one for lead in the 30,000 plus PSI range in the 454.  DP

I've used that same bullet/powder combo and also got nice groups. You ain't kiddin' about the metering like mud!
