I'll agree with shootall. Take a class, get a meter, and figure out what works for you.  I've had Type II for about 8 years.  After the frustration of not being able to figure out what to do, I took a class Kaiser offered, got a meter and started paying attention what worked for me.  What works for my wife isn't the same as what works for me.  Point is you have to work with your body not someone elses.  Good luck. gene

This was my post ten years ago. After adding ten years to how old I was then, I now have to take Metformin and the wife insulin. But I did manage to stay off med's for a while. It was worth the effort. Also lost access to this account hence the new name. Kind of fun reading these old posts ànd even replying to some of them.

Yes it is interesting looking at all the old posts from people past and present on this forum. Shucks even some people changed military service, places they have lived and all kinds of different things in their lives. Some have led very interesting lives indeed. Very interesting and mysterious.

I do not have diabetes but I am amazed at how many of people I grew up with do.

Metaphormin, from what those I know who take it say: Hershey Squirts via prescription. :o

Happens. Consider the alternative: loss of eyesight, loss of legs or arms or such, looking at the grass from the roots side.

Some here have mentioned weight lifting, to help ward off diabetes. In a study it showed lifting weights alone can reduce your risk by a third. For men that weight trained for at least 150 minutes per week. Combining aerobic exercise with weight training reduced risks in men by 60%. There are many other benefits from weight training and aerobic exercise, besides reducing the risk of diabetes. One big benefit from weight training is that muscle burns calories while you are at rest. It also boosts your metabolism, so you can eat more. ;D
It doesn't cost a lot to train with weights, nor do you have to join a gym. Buy some different weighted dumb bells, maybe a bar and some plates, and lift at home. A bench is nice to have also. You don't really need a trainer either. There is a bunch of information on the internet for training with weights.
I have found I enjoy lifting weights more than aerobic exercise. It is very tough to get started on an exercise program, but after a couple weeks it becomes easier, and you just might like it.

Agree with this.  I have an older Bowflex XTL that does a nice job for me.  Quiet, smooth, low impact, and open range of motion.  Not that clunky, restrictive range of motion from a weight machine.  If you shop carefully, (C-list or Marketplace), you should be able to find one for $100 or thereabouts.  I do recommend you get one with the Lat tower.  Combine that with a bicycle during the nice weather months, and you should be able to keep things reigned in.

Now the biggest downside.....you'll need about 6 feet horizontally, and 6.5 feet vertically, against a wall, and the bench sticks out about 6 feet from the wall.  If you have a seldom-used room you could keep it in, that would be ideal.

It is a curse of bad health styles, and genes.
My one Grandmother who was probably 200 pounds as long as I was alive, did not get it nor did any one in either family of Mom and Dad.

Just opinion, but several gents I knew, it came on suddenly after they had nasty problems in life not related to diet.
I asked my doctor, even though I do not have that problem because so many I grew up with were getting it, can a person beat it with life style changes are done.
He said yes but one has to have the right mind-set to do it, unless you are born with it .
There are technically 5 types and if one had 1-3 you have to deal and live with it.  8)

Don’t have it yet. My dad did and sometimes I worry I could go down the same road. Found myself about 20 lbs. heavier than I’d ever been last year. Startled, I started exercising. I used to do a bit of cycling and thought I might start again when I retired three years ago. Perfect time I figured. Started riding again and doing basic exercises (squats, pushups) and using a bowflex that’s been collecting dust. Lost 20 lbs. in no time and have kept it off for the last year. I don’t kill myself doing these things, I’ll go days between exercising and not and when I do, it takes very little time (except my riding, I’ll ride for hours when I do). When you see results, it makes it much easier. My diet isn’t much different, just cut out most sugars.

Well guys for what it is worth I got my weight under control in less than a year and exercised and walked. No problems now 10 years later. Staying at my high school weight. Still on meds for BP but well under control.

That’s great as I would not want you to die of a debilitating disease... I’d much rather you suffer the course you’ve chosen.

Good job! Exercising isn’t really a chore once you get into a routine and start seeing results. I don’t do it everyday but stay on top of it.

I was diagnosed with pre-diabetes as well.   John (and others) I used to be on Weight Watchers online , but got to point I couldn't justify the $19/per month . Around first of year I discovered myfitnesspal.com which is totally free that does basically the same thing as WW.  you input age, weight, height, activity level, and how many lbs you want to lose in a specified time period. It then calculates your need of calories, carbs, fat, & protein . You just basically input what you eat at breakfast, lunch and dinner and snacks and try to stay under your limit. I am on 1910 calories per day and have lost 23# since Jan4, 2013....not too bad a deal....they also have corresponding app for smartphone that you can use while you're away from home and it syncs all the data for you to your home computer...

I looked into myfitness pal and it’s pretty steep $$$
Not free
Do you have a free link I could look at
Thanks
