Abortion debate persists 40 years after Roe v. Wade ruling  Published January 22, 2013
Associated Press
  •   Jan. 22, 2013: Abortion opponents rally at the steps of the Kansas Statehouse in Topeka, Kan. (AP)
TOPEKA, Kan. –  Abortion opponents marked the 40th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision Tuesday with workshops, prayers and calls for more limits on the rights established by the Supreme Court in the landmark ruling that still defines one of the nation's most intractable debates.
Many in the anti-abortion movement looked to Kansas, where Republican Gov. Sam Brownback signed a series of tough anti-abortion measures during his first two years in office. Other states with GOP governors and Republican-controlled legislatures have taken similar steps.

"There's joy in what you're doing and keep it up," Brownback urged hundreds of fellow abortion opponents at a rally outside the Kansas Statehouse. "Keep marching. Keep moving."
Abortion-rights groups observed a quieter anniversary -- a possible reflection of the reality that it's far rarer for lawmakers to expand access to abortion. The National Organization for Women planned a candlelight vigil at the Supreme Court to commemorate the 1973 decision, which created a constitutional right to abortions in some circumstances and prevented states from banning the practice.
President Barack Obama issued a statement reaffirming the decision's commitment to "reproductive freedom" and the principle that "government should not intrude on our most private family matters, and women should be able to make their own choices about their bodies and their health care."

The ruling "should be honored," said Rep. Emily Perry, a lawyer and Democrat from the Kansas City suburb of Mission who supports abortion rights. "I wish the amount of energy put into narrowing Roe v. Wade would be put into school funding or our budget."
In Topeka, at least 1,000 people rallied with Brownback and anti-abortion legislators. The Kansas governor has called on state lawmakers to create "a culture of life." He is expected to support whatever further restrictions they approve.

Kansans for Life, the most influential of the state's anti-abortion groups, plans to ask lawmakers to enact legislation ensuring that the state doesn't finance abortions even indirectly, such as through tax breaks or by allowing doctors-in-training at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan., to perform them on the center's time.
The group also wants to strengthen a state law dictating what information must be provided to abortion patients, banning abortions because of the fetus' gender and allowing wrongful-death lawsuits when a fetus dies because of an accident.

Comparable proposals are gaining ground elsewhere, too. Republican lawmakers in North Dakota are pursuing a measure to ban "sex selection" abortions. Alabama's GOP legislative majorities are looking to impose new health and safety regulations for abortion providers. And Republicans in Arkansas want to ban abortions after the 20th week of pregnancy.
"I think more of America is becoming more pro-life," said Dr. Melissa Colbern, who started a crisis pregnancy center in Topeka near the state Capitol last year. "I think maybe the culture is changing."

In Mississippi, where Republican Gov. Phil Bryant has said repeatedly that he wants the state to be abortion-free, advocates on both sides of the issue protested outside the state's only abortion clinic in the capital of Jackson. A large sign attached to the building declared: "This clinic stays open."
Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL Pro Choice America, said most citizens are not demanding their elected officials push for new abortion restrictions.
"A lot of these anti-choice politicians don't run on the issue," Keenan said in an interview Tuesday with The Associated Press. "They run on jobs, or they run on the economy. And then they show up in these state legislatures, and they begin to advance very anti-choice legislation."

In the four decades since Roe v. Wade, a series of court decisions have narrowed its scope. With each decision, lawmakers in multiple states have followed up by making abortions more difficult to obtain or imposing restrictions on providers.
According to the New York-based Guttmacher Institute, a reproductive-rights think tank, 135 laws aimed in some way at restricting access to abortion were enacted in 30 states -- most of them with Republican-controlled legislatures -- in 2011 and 2012. More such measures already have been proposed in several states this year.
In Wyoming, for example, a pending bill would prohibit abortions after a fetal heartbeat is audible. A similar "heartbeat" bill is pending in Mississippi, and one was debated but later sidetracked in Ohio last year.

In Texas, Republican Gov. Rick Perry has told lawmakers that he expects to make progress during the 2013 session toward his goal of making abortion "at any stage a thing of the past." Anti-abortion activists have pledged to use every legal means possible to make obtaining abortions difficult, if not impossible.
But Kansans for Life, the most influential abortion group lobbying state lawmakers in Topeka, eschews proposals designed to set up a head-on legal challenge to the Roe v. Wade decision, fearing the Supreme Court might wipe out some of the gains achieved by abortion opponents in recent years.
"We'd like to continue on our successful strategy," Kathy Ostrowski, the group's legislative director, said during a pre-rally news conference. "We feel that we're making better strides that way."
Tuesday's events won't be the only anniversary observances. The annual March for Life, which traditionally draws several hundred thousand abortion opponents to Washington, is scheduled for Friday.
Although bills to strengthen access to abortion are rare, there are some pending proposals in New York and Washington state.

In their state of the state speeches this month, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo endorsed a bill that would further entrench the right to abortion, while Washington's new governor, Jay Inslee, said he wants to enact a measure that would require insurers who cover maternity care -- which Washington insurers are mandated to provide -- to also pay for abortions.
Both Cuomo and Inslee are Democrats.

Roe v. Wade was given approval by a Republican dominated Supreme Court. Occasionally even the right gets it right.

Unbelieveable to me in a culture that grew itself to absolute world superiority, that ANYONE other than an absolute sicko criminal, would condone murdering unborn CHILDREN. Its uncomprehensible to my mind. Yet somehow it became the norm.  Stuff like this gives me a better illustration of whatever deplorable acts the Romans must have been commiting as their cities crumbled around them..j

To me, it is unbelievable that a civilized nation might have a law allowing murder.  Such a mindset is so foreign to morality that a society that does condone or allow it is no better than any society or culture that exists or has existed on this planet.
I look forward to the unlikley day when pregrant mothers will be forced to look at the ultrasounds showing the growth and reality of their children.  But I fear that even with that law in place, the evil present in their hearts would still chose abortion.
Such selfishness and evil will bring them eternal death.  I'm not female, but if I were, I'd have the responsibilty not to get pregnant if I didn't want to me a mother.
My own mother's sister aborted her child in a bathtub.  She is now nearing 90 years of age, and her mind is alert and aware.  She still has not repented of her child's death.  It seems unimaginable to me that a human could so easily dispose of a child without regret or a sincere need to repent.
It seems to me that a person who kills a child deserves the worst of eternal punishment.  We can see the terrible sin of the recent massacre of children at a school, but we can ignore as a nation the killing of so many thousands of younger children who died because of an abortion.  I sincerely wish that every woman willing to kill her child had a mother who felt the same.  Such a mother is unfit to live.  Such a mother has no purpose upon the earth.  She deserves the worst of Hell's torment.  No crime is more horrid than the killing of a child.
This nation cannot long stand with such ongoing sin.  Perhaps the Muslims will take the U.S. continent from us, but still, I look forward to our end, when such unholy crimes cannot occur.  Absolutely nothing is more sinful than killing a child.

Talk about a steaming pile.
So Obama considers murdering a child as, reproductive freedom, private family matters, a women making a choice about her body, and health care. Just an indication of how these kind of people think.

Then we have this little video of celebrating 40 years of murdering children.

BUGEYE. Agreed Sir. Pretty easy to tell Christians from non Christians here. It really ticks me to hear hussein, or any other non Christian talking about a womans right to choose. Theres only 2 choices concerning a baby. Life, or death there is no inbetween. Liberals and dems could care less about denying the child a right to life, they care only about themselves, and some even call themselves Christian, they aint. POWDERMAN.  >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(

It's legalised murder, plain and simple. It's also a direct 10th Amendment violation.

What I find particularly repulsive is the father of the baby has no say in the matter. The mother gets to be executioner while the father is powerless. As a man who is blessed and grateful to have custody of my own 3 children I know there are many men out there who would graciously raise these babies by themselves if they could only have the chance. The government forces men to pay child support for 18 years on their child but doesn't give these same men any voice in whether the baby gets murdered or not.

"Necessity is the plea for every infringement of human freedom. It is the argument of tyrants; it is the creed of slaves."

Your heart won't beat on it's own until you have functioning lungs. Until the lungs work, the mother is a biological heart/lung machine--- in other words, a fetus is NOT an independent organism, and NOT a person.

And, by the way, a heart has automaticity, which means the cells beat on their own. At 18 days there are no valves, and very little structure, so that heartbeat is NOT providing circulation.

CDQ,  Does your theory apply to those on ventilators in hospitals?   How about someone who needs kidney dialysis?  It could be argued that they are "not an independent organism"  and are therefore "not a person" by your definition.  I guess we should just pull the plug on them too.

Then you have folks with pacemakers... their hearts would not beat without them either.  Gee, CDQ, I think you just solved the overpopulation problem.  We will just kill off anyone who has any outside dependency to live, we could even extend that to prescription drugs.  Wouldn't need to spend all that money on healthcare then either would we?

And all those patient populations have the right to stop life support, either by choice or BY THE DECISION OF IMMEDIATE FAMILY.

By the way, I'm not talking about theory, I'm giving you biological facts.

chang. Fetus is a libbydem term for baby, or human being. It just sounds better for a female to say, I terminated my fetus, than to tell the truth and say, I just murdered my child. The baby butchers and their helpers, unless they stop killing and repent of their sins, will be in for a huge shock on judgement day, also the unrepentant female.
Remember ol tiller the killer?? The baby butcher who bragged about killing over 40,000 babies?? He went to judgement day with the blood of over 40,000 murdered babies on his hands. You think God rewarded him for that?? I'd give you some scripture to read but doubt you have the means to look it up. POWDERMAN.  >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(

You've made some really good points here.  I've had a defibrillator in my chest for over eight years.
twice in those years it has shocked my heart, both in the middle of the night.  I would have been dead for seven years now if I didn't have it.  I'm sure that CDQ wishes that I didn't have it so I wouldn't be on his case all the time.

The decision to have an implanted defibrillator is up to the individual. How I personally feel about that decision does not matter, just as the mother's decision to terminate the fetus (a bio-medical term, by the way, not a political one) is hers. The righty press (FauxNews) is fond of publicizing the "beating heart" argument. I'm just pointing out that that is a cluster of cells which will become a heart--- since they are the same cells, they will contract by themselves. It's still not a heart. And, that's no more a baby than a sperm cell is. Ask any neonatologist if an 18 day old fetus is viable. A 25 week old fetus MIGHT be viable, after weeks on life support.

The Founding Fathers had  complete knowledge of the Bible, but they did not choose to make it our governmental document. Just like God, they left many things up to individual choice. Just because you do not like those choices does not give you the power to override them. You might remember Joe Biden's answer to the debate question about abortion. He said he was personally against abortion, but that he refused to force his own religious beliefs onto someone else. Like it or not, that moment and that answer was the kiss of death to any surge Rmoney would have gotten from Lyin' Ryan. Because MOST Americans believe in free will, and the freedom of religion guaranteed by the 1st Amendment.

So it does not matter what YOUR personal beliefs are--- all that matters are the beliefs of the pregnant woman.

The founders were certainly versed in Christs teachings, and they could not imagine that people would become so callous and cruel to murder babies.

People who follow Christs teachings do so by their own free will.  And they realize through study that it's a life at conception.  Sadly, too many scientific types have put away God in favor of their own inflated conception of their intellect.   Scientific fact?  How about scientific theory by scientists that I just described.
Free will??  Yes, I choose to follow Jesus for eternity in Heaven..  You choose to follow man for eternity in hell.

And don't accuse me of judging. It's all laid out in the Bible for anyone to learn.

Oh, killing preborn children is a religious belief, or what you call personal beliefs. You refer to a mother killing her unborn child as the beliefs of a pregnant women. Does that really make any sense to you?
What about ones right to life? Your argument is that a baby in a mothers womb is not a life. How is it that if a expectant mother is killed, the one doing the killing is charged with two deaths? Do you find that as kind of twisted thinking, when you, and others believe that a baby is just a fetus. Why are certain animals protected way more than an unborn baby. Ever wonder why the government will fine you thousands of dollars for destroying an eagle's egg, yet offer money to women for killing their unborn child?
You mention facts. Do you know that right after conception the new and separate life has hundreds of cells,, and has all the genetic information necessary to build a baby. At that same time the separate life develops a protective hormone to prevent the mothers body from rejecting it. After just 17 days nothing new is added. All the baby needs is food, liquid, and time to grow.
A single celled organism is viewed as life, but yet because of people wanting a method of birth control (for convenience) a living human being inside its mother is viewed as non living. Did you ever stop and think the reason for that belief is to carry on with the legal killing of humans for convenience? This country was once viewed as a very giving country. Now it has become very selfish and has been for the last 40 years. The greatest proof of that selfishness is abortion.
I think abortion has become the greatest destroyer of peace today, which brings people to blindness. We accept the fact that a mother can choose to kill her child, By that acceptance, how can we tell people not to kill each other? In a way we are telling people its ok to kill.
Those people who will not be governed by God will be ruled by tyrants.    Wm. Penn

DoubleBass, I don't know your circumstances, but by stepping in and raising your kids by yourself, God will smile on you.

I thank Him every day in prayer for the opportunity, He has indeed smiled upon me.

Five to six million ? Boy they are working right up there with Hitler and Stalin as far as setting a
record. Somehow I bet they are proud of that body count.  >:(

DDZ, that was a well thought out post.  If anyone disputes that post, it's proof positive of their hate for Christianity.  The Bible is plain about the unborn.

Lakota, I found out that raising kids is a real job, and I only had one.
I pray for all the people here who are doing the right thing.

Here is a biological fact.  An unborn baby is only half it's mother.  The other half of it's DNA is from a father.

What about his right to have his child?  A baby can survive outside the womb at 5 months.  Even ALL European nations have outlawed abortions after 5 months.  We still have late term abortions.  A baby is actually not part of the mother, but is like a parasite living off the mother.  If a tapeworm attaches itself in your intestines, it is not part of you, it is a seperate organism.  A baby is a seperate life.

There is not excuse for abortions today.  Girls can get free birth control at a health department.  Condoms are everywhere.  I am a product of a date rape.  I'm glad they didn't have abortion back then.  I didn't find this out until recently.  Who knows what these aborted humans might have accomplished.  Most abortions until recently were white middle and upper class.
