.45-70 ghost ring sight range report
« on: January 23, 2013, 09:52:19 AM »
I put the williams ghost ring on my 22" factory .45-70 barrel. point of impact is 24 inches low at 100 yards with the rear sight elevated all the way! Three different shooters, same problem. it shot way low with the factory sight also. Could it have the wrong front blade? Gonna read the faqs again.....

You will need a taller front blade/ramp. My Skinner Black Gold peep required a taller blade... I used the tallest Skinner brass blade in a Marbles dovetail ramp.

I though shorter, but what gets me is how tall and heavy the factory blade is. looks over size, and shoots 2 feet low with factory sight set at highest elevation. Can i order a replacement from H & R or am I looking aftermarket?

Use one of the sight height calculators in the FAQ and file your sight down.  I'd leave it a little high and make a range trip to see if you need to take any more off.

I am looking for a ghost ring for my 45-70 also but alas I am north of the 49th. any one know a supplier and part # for this. I am also assuming the sight would fit back on top of the chamber? where the sight screws are? Western gun parts quoted me on a Williams but didn't really seem to know what she was talking about as far as fit on regular 22" barrel

cuda,

I take a couple of files to the range and just keep filing and lowering the front blade till I get what I want.  Had to do this with my 500 S&W and one of my 45-70s.  When you are done you can measure the front blade and then buy the right one, or just smooth out your filing and touchup the blade, my approach.  I would put the rear sight in the middle of the adjustment range and be shooting at least 100 yards when you do this.

good luck,

I got Skinner on mine, front and rear.  The front comes tall enough to file to point of impact, plus the rear is adjustable.  Visible in all lighting conditions.

If you call Williams Gunsight, and ask for help with a technical question, they are very helpful and knowledgeable. Many of the sight sets come with 2 front sights, so you can have the right one at hand, in one order.
They can tell you what front sight you need, and sell it to you also. Manufacturers always charge a little more than distributors, but I figure you are getting advice from an expert at the factory, it's a good deal

if you have the sight off the barrel, one way to get the height is to wrap a stiff copper wire around the barrel, then bring it up as a sight.

use the rear sight in its middle location, and keep cutting it off till you have the height right (close)

then get a ramp/bead combo that height.  install. fine tune.

ok, using brownell's formula and measuring as close as i can i think the front sight is .016 too tall. second measurement doing it a little different shows it .034 too tall. This is with the factory sight. Even if it's off by .034 would that be enough to have point of impact 24"+ low from point of aim at 100 yards? Have you guys found your factory sights to be this far off?

Yes, on a 24" barrel lowering the front sight .01" would make about a 3' foot change @ 100 yards.  Don't take me to task on the math as I haven't had my coffee yet and I did it in my head. :P

ok sounds like this gun and I are going to the range again, along with a couple of files! Biggest problem I forsee is being patient only taking off a little at time. I have a tendency to over do it.

When you file a sight down, it's typically smart to center vertically the rear sight first.  Then walk it into the bull, that way you have vertical adjustment up and down for future loads.  ;)

If you think you might ever shoot 'long range' you might want to put the rear at 'almost' its lowest setting, for sure no more than 1/4 'up' (it is nice to give yourself a little elbow room), when you file/dial the front for 100yd., that way you will have elevation adjustment to reach on out there someday.
