New Mexico Gov. Martinez says committed to repeal of illegal immigrant license law  Published January 24, 2013
Associated Press    Gov. Susana Martinez said Wednesday that she remained committed to "full repeal" of a New Mexico law that allows illegal immigrants to obtain driver's licenses despite signaling a willingness to compromise with state Democrats a day earlier.
Speaking at a press conference about a new state driver's license system, Martinez told reporters that she will continue to push for a repeal of the law even though Senate Democrats have blocked the Republican governor's previous attempts and have warned that another repeal attempt had no chance of passing.
"This is what I hear from people across the state," Martinez said. "They support a repeal of this law."

Martinez told the Albuquerque Journal on Tuesday that she would consider legislation that creates a driver's permit for illegal immigrants that couldn't be used as identification. Her comments to the newspaper signaled for the first time since taking office that she would consider a compromise bill that would allow illegal immigrants to somehow legally drive in the state. In the past, Martinez said she would not support anything besides repeal.
But on Wednesday, Martinez said she remained committed repeal first and would only consider "anything that comes across my desk" after repeal failed.
Asked if she supported a similar law like in Utah -- a state where people who can't prove U.S. residency can get a permit that allows them to drive, but that document is not a valid identification -- Martinez said no. The Utah law, Martinez said, didn't meet federal security guidelines in her opinion.

Still, some immigrant advocacy groups welcomed the remarks by Martinez. Marcela Diaz of Somos Un Pueblo Unido, a Santa Fe-based immigrant advocacy organization, called the governor's comments "encouraging" and said immigrant groups were ready to work with the governor and lawmakers on amending the law to fight fraud.
"This is an opening," said Diaz, who has opposed the governor's repeal effort and has organized protests against it. "Even talk of a compromise from the governor's office is encouraging."

Martinez made her latest comments at an Albuquerque press conference as she unveiled a new system that will allow New Mexico residents to renew driver's licenses online rather than forcing them to renew at crowded Motor Vehicle Division offices. She said the new system came after state workers developed it at her request and should help end long lines at DMV offices.
Drivers will be able to renew licenses online as long they met certain requirements and aren't holders of commercial driver's licenses or have certain medical conditions, state officials said.

 • I feel much better now knowing it will get worse.
Since this is on Anna's home turf, is it possible to do like Obama does and just issue Executive Orders for this to happen?

Martinez is actually a pretty good Governer. She holds a CCW and wasn't bashful about to the media
when she ran for Governer. As far as an executive order if she ever did use one for this it would include undoing this states amnisty status as well. Remember what I have said about this. Martinez
is a Chicano and views illegal immigration in a wholly different light than you would think she would.
She has also been very vocal against all the bilingual garbage going on in these border states these
days. She said the language here is English, and although its beneficial to speak Spanish as a second
language it should not be forced on the public at large.

Martinez is very pro 2nd amendment and she is hard on crime. Running a state this size where vast
distances can separate its city's. She feels that the citizens of this state have a right to defend themselves at all times. And if you don't see things getting done here on a conservative level its
only because of our legislature and not her. When reading anything about her remember she is one
of those who remains silent but carries a really big stick. As the crime here increases because of
illegal immigration I wouldn't be surprised if she did do something about it on her own. In a state
that is a leader in scientific R&D and always has been. We remarkably remaine off the MSM radar
and she likes it that way.

I hope I have answered your question BBF but to understand this governor its better to have a little
understanding of who and what she is first. Then you can make your own assessments. She has
never been a mixed bag of contradictions like other governors are. And she can't be judged by
anything the media ever says about her. Because just about the time they say she is going to do
something in the end she does the opposite. That is the media doing that and not her. Martinez
sticks to her guns so to say so any liberal tripe about her is usually wrong. The one thing I admire
the most out of her is that she is not a media hound up there bragging about what she is going to
do. She just does it like it or not. True to her Conquistador roots and if people don't like it
to bad so sad !  :P

Martinez is definitely not a liberal. She was born a Texan. She also promised not to cut education funding when she ran for governor, and has done just that three times so far. She faces a good bit of opposition from the state legislature on the driver's license issue. I like her proposal to issue "undocumented" licenses as permits, or really, anything that can be distinguished from the regular licenses.

Because the education system was being ran by liberals who would not take her recommendations
on any change to that failed system. So her intention was to hit them and the teachers unions in the pocket book until they comply.

Martinez is doing a good job or as good as she can considering the legislature she has to work with. You also have to consider the fact that money has been tight the last few years due to the recession and ongoing programs that were instituted by her predecessor, Fat Bill Richardson and his go along with anything legislature. Spending had to be cut because, thankfully, New Mexico can't run a deficit like some states. Due to some smart people that drew up the State Constitution we have to live within our means.

Susanna did make good on one of her promises. She sold Fat Bill's fancy jet. The liberal legislature won't give her a bill to eliminate driver's licenses for illegals (more of Fat Bill's legacy) even though polls have shown 70% of the population favor getting rid of them.

As far as I'm concerned she is doing a good. Real close to Gary Johnson who was reviled by the democrats during his eight years in office.

If these criminal invaders can be documented as undocumented they can be arrested and deported. POWDERMAN.  :o :o

She still lied about not cutting education. Ultimately dropped NM back down to 49th in the country. And, the public records show that she sold the state jet at a 60% loss to one of her oil millionaire buds in Texas. Typical righty, no matter the name or sex.

Bought for 5.5 Million in 05,,,,sold for 2.5 Million in 11 through a broker ( not bad in these times). Couple that bought it was from Alaska and Wisconsin.  90% of the cost of an aircraft is keeping it up to regs. and flying these days.  Thank your buddy Bill for wasting money and buying the damn thing in the first place.

Education is falling back not because of Martinez not taking any crap from a bunch of liberals . As a percentage it is the amnesty program that is doing that. Blame the education system in Mexico
that our tax money now goes to bringing these backwards kids of illegals up into the 21st century .
We have a twelve year old that still can't read or write except on the level of a first grader.
And the liberal teachers want to cook the books to make this kid look like they are on a par with
an American kid of the same age ?  So of course the numbers look bad , but only because the illegal
alien problem in this state has tripled in the last three years .

A 60 % return on a used jet that's over six years old is a great exchange. She got rid of the gas guzzler that represented the usual Democrat air of opulence over the people they say they serve.
I'm surprised that Obama or Fat Bill never has told us to just eat cake .

What if they were legal?  Would you approve then?   ???
Study after study has shown how dangerous distracted driving is yet people continue to talk on their cell phones while driving. Driving in the U.S. requires your full attention. Many states and countries have made it illegal to use a cell phone while operating a motor vehicle and the federal government should follow their lead. Banning the use of cell phones while driving would have the added benefit of making the no-texting law enforceable.

Oh yea that's why we see 30 or more illegals standing on a street corner in  the morning waiting for
the guy who comes and picks a couple of them to go work for a day . Remonisant of the way it was
during the great depression your Obamas economy is so good . Why every place you look there is
nothing but illegals where just five years ago it wasn't like that . Your info and facts are seriously
flawed and your proof web sites are ran by liberal hacks who are just like you .

Your missing the point , they are still behind by a drastic margin and it isn't me who makes the
rules .So if I approve or not is a moot point, unless your using that to derail what is the truth about this .

Being "behind" is not the problem.  Mexicans are fantastic manual laborers.  They don't need to speak English.  It is better to keep them separate.  The way to do that is with language.  Let them speak only Spanish.

It is a tragedy for a great country that America has replaced thru immigration European American scientists and engineers with non-European peoples.  When you lose the majority people stock in a nation, you lose the nation.
