Communication??
« on: January 24, 2013, 01:34:05 PM »
"the Guys" and i have been talking and we have most everything ready for whatever may happen if any. The only thing we cant seem to get together on is communication. I have looked at VHF, Shortwave, handheld we all live in about a 15-20 mile radius from each other. INPUT????

cb's and amps.

no infrastructure- no fcc

cb radios are a dime a dozen right now.
an amp would still cost(if you can find one)
who's to say you couldn't find a whiz kid to
whip one up for you (or yourself if you know how)

and frs for short range.
those are semi out of fashion.
the last three i got were free because the
battery packs were dead and they couldn't be
charged. i said thanks and took 'em home and
out went the packs and in went the AAA's.
that's assuming of course that they are
dry cell compatible. mine were.

good luck

that's assuming of course there
hasn't been a big mess of emp
and most of the earth isn't toast.
i guess smoke signals would be
the most expedient in that scenario :(

id agree. If 15-20 miles is the max you need a good cb would probably take care of it. there cheap enough too that you could buy one and even if it didnt give all the range you wanted you wouldnt be out much and it still could be used for shorter range comunication.

If you are interested in some sort of super D duper CB simply spend 15 minutes at a truckstop. Sidle up to the first chromium plated fully illuminated Peterbilt and ask where he got his radio peaked and tuned. You'll be hooked up right away.

at one time back in the day, about 1980 maybe 79 or 78. i remember we had a base station in our kitchen. we cud talk to all the neighbors for a few miles around.everybody had one.we had them in all our truks.

in the late 80's we used them to hunt coyotes with dogs.we would go out a bunch of us on a sat or sunday morn in the winter and turn the dogs loose.we used the cb's to keep in touch where the yote was goin. it really didnt seem to give us much advantage over the yote as we only got one or two in the years i was hunting.and one of them we twisted out of a culvert with barb wire.the dogs caught one but i dont remember anyone actually shooting one.

i do remember sitting in my dump truk taking to a guy down in mississipi on clear days.

During training as a fireman and emt I had an opertunity to listen to a recording of the firemen, cops and others on 911. Communications were useless. You could not tell what was going on with everyone yelling into their radios and it just got worse until the end. In a disaster the first thing to go is communications because of overload.
What we determined was that before the event have as much as you can, worked out. Places to meet, to go, to leave messages, times to meet, ETC.
I dont know of anything that would be fool proof and with comm. others you may not want to know, would know where you were.

that's a good point b.p.
i think it was ragnar benson that
covered that in one of his books.
he said to keep radio contact to
a bare minimum, and to use a
code for people and places that
was worked out previously. one
for instance his group used calibers.
one person was 243 , another was 308,
and places were nonsense places
like general store for a particular
draw in the woods, etc.
comms are a good idea when used
with good sense.

If you went to the expense of getting sideband CBs, you wouldn't be fighting a lot of radio chatter.

Regards,

One thing to consider also is radiation.  Radio transmitters and receivers in handsets give off large amounts of EMF radiation.  Not a good thing for your kids to be yapping, yapping away on.  Be safe.   :)
Study after study has shown how dangerous distracted driving is yet people continue to talk on their cell phones while driving. Driving in the U.S. requires your full attention. Many states and countries have made it illegal to use a cell phone while operating a motor vehicle and the federal government should follow their lead. Banning the use of cell phones while driving would have the added benefit of making the no-texting law enforceable.

when the time comes we will figure it out. i really dont see any other way than cb radios or smoke signals.one of those only werks well at night. you will pretty much be on your own.

in the old days they would send the oldest boy off on the fastest horse to alert the neighbors.it will prob be the same deal.

Maybe it'll be like the olden days when you simply made a decision on your own with out the consultation of those presumably in charge. I remember the day before cell phones when the boss was out and a decision needed to be made, you just did it. Hell the world turned pretty well.

Might be that Darwin will be able to play catch up for a while. We forget that these last few decades are an anomaly in human history. We'll get by fine it'll simply take some getting used to.

Garmin Rhino GPS.
The Rino has a dual radio / GPS.  There are multiple models and maps are down loadable.
But you can use the radios line of sight for about 6 miles but htey also have another feature for a suped up radio (you will need a license)
The really cool thing is you can radio each other and it sends that person your location.
good and bad.  Yo ucan pick different friques to send to and from.  I own two and am working on getting more for my group.
Oh they run off of AA batteries.  A standard set runs for about a day, the lithium run for about two days strait and the rechargables, well i think it depends the way you recharge them they last about a full day.

we still use the AAA powered frs
for short range.
the battery issue we get around by
only powering up at pre-arranged
times. say, 10am , noon, 2pm, etc.
and using earphones so only the
intended person is hearing the
transmission, not someone
close, or the wildlife.
