Guys we went through this before. Shouldn't we be prepared by now? The only reason I can think of for a person to be out trying to find ammo is because he just bought a new gun, he has never owned and would like to fire it.
Some of the same people I know crying last time, are at it again.

i have quite a bit myself, it's cutting into my
target practice for sure, but i'm not hurting.
have a goodly number of arrows, but i'll be getting
a few more. i do wish the recently christened
ar crowd had stocked up a bit more so there
wouldn't have been so much turmoil.
i myself like to see more and more shooters
come on the scene.
what i don't like is to see folks buying things
to resell at inflated prices ( i won't say flip-
i think that is a term for the you-floob punks)
folks turning around and reselling ar's and
ammo are in violation of already existing laws.
these are the folks that make it hard on
law-abiding gun owners.

As of this moment in my city, the only thing to cry about is price. Availability has been temporarily at least, restored. Our biggest local gun shop pretty much restocked their shelves with most all calibers but at extremely inflated prices, suspiciously its all foreign ammo, American manufacturers are not to be found in the popular calibers. Least the russians are trying to help us out. A buck a round for fiocci .223. $49.00 for 500 .22's.

I have plenty of the stuff I use regulerly. I just bought a 5.7 and am unable to find ammo for it. I figure in a few weeks when the panic is over I'll find some trickling in.

I agree that it's important to have a good supply of ammo if you shoot a lot, but it is worth crying, whining, simpering and prostrating onesself with grief when there's an interruption in the supply.

There have been several times in the past 10 years when some kinds of ammo, including target 22s and big game cartridges have become scarce.

Times like this make me glad I have popular, but not trendy, calibers. I've still been able to get my .44 mag, .45acp (but not as reliably as the other calibers I'm listing), .243, and such, but it seems every time a box of .22lr hits a shelf, people flock to the counter to claim it.

Fortunately, I keep a decent stock of ammo in most of my calibers, excepting the .44, which has me planning to start reloading. Big margin with that round, and I could pay for a decent Lee kit within four or five boxes.

I wouldn't say it's just starting for reloaders. It's been going on for years, since the GW Bush years. For a long time I could not get 45ACP brass. and other common components. I don't know what things are like now. But suffice it to say, the days when you could just snap your fingers, pay with plastic, and have the big brown truck make a delivery a few days later are over, at least for a while. And they have been over for no less than five years.

I have always had ample supply myself plus reloading stuff, and have not went into a gun shop since all this started, too crowded for me.
I did notice the shelves are still full of 30-30 Remington green box at Meijer today and 30-06 green box, how odd nobody wants this stuff. I have more 30-30's than I could shoot up at this time, but what the heck, I guess it would not hurt to buy some more core lokts, hate to see them sit there like that with nobody paying attention.

One thing that always happens following these situations, there will be a permanent increase in pricing. The day of $5 223 and $10 9mm are long, long gone.

$25 / 500 for bulk 22 and $15 / 20 223 cheapo is probably the lowest we'll ever see again.

Anyone I see that complains, I ask what have you been doing for the past 5 years?

The other side of this is that I don't f\think that it is right that if I want to take my grandson plinking, I have to dig into a supply of squirreled away .22's to do it. It amazes me how many primers disappear when I am trying to work up a load, or just shooting for fun. It is taking all the fun out of getting a new caliber, a need for cases (saved from once fired), a couple bullet weights, maybe a different powder if what you have on hand doesn't seem to be doing the trick, and then often I have had to "settle" for what was actually available. At $25 or more a box of 50, and $30 or more for a pound it adds up, and I have a lifetime supply of some that doesn't shoot as well as the book said. (4007ssc).

One guy at the range claimed something like 100,000 primers. Hope he has good storage.

Hard to stockpile what ya can't find. In walmart last week the ONLY pistol ammo was 44 mag and 45 LC. Like KENNY D said I hate to shoot what I can't replace. POWDERMAN.

I think three things are going on.
1 is that some people are thinking that they are going to make money on guns if they reinstate the Clinton Gun Ban (we need to call it that, to bruise Obama and Feinstiens egos) I remember per Clinton ban Ak's were 200 Ar's were 500 to 750 depending on what you wanted adn the day after AK's trippled and Ar's easily hit 1200+. And I think many are thinking they will make a lot of money on them.
2 that people are buying these new guns in hopes of turning them and actually want to try them out.
3 that they believe that Holder said "they may have a right to guns but the 2nd says nothing about ammo" What most people do not understand is that everything the left says they mean. I expect huge taxes on ammo.
We also saw this same scamper for ammo 4 years ago when he was first ellected. and ammo prices shot up and settled back down a $1 a box higher than before the run on ammo, guns and equipment.

Buy two bulk packs.
Shoot one, store one.
It doesn't take long to build a decent stockpile.

You may have a "right" to something, but there is no right to something "cheap". I could not afford to blow 1000 bucks on some AR variant BEFORE the big fubar hit. I also don't shoot semi-autos because I wind up losing brass and they just eat too much ammo. Nothing specific against them, just not my thing. I would like a bass boat also, but I have a Jon

Yew boys what are all up in the air about availability must not have been boy scouts or else didn't take their motto of "be prepared" very seriously.

I figure I have about a life time supply of most everything I use except 22LR and really if it was only me shooting it might have of that. But with Matt and the three boys also using up my supply it won't last. But I'm not concerned with that. I have 10,000 rounds on order at regular prices. The first 5000 should ship early next month and the other 5000 in April.

Now back in the day when I was shooting regularly and competing that would have barely been a year's worth for me but now no more than I shoot and limiting the boy's ammo a bit and maybe restocking occasional as the price is right I should have more than enough to get us by.

No, if a bunch of shooter didn't go nuts every time some possible anti gun legislation comes up and take out second mortgages to buy up everything in sight we wouldn't have these shortages. Look in the mirror, the enemy is us.

I always buy rimfire ammo by the case of 5000, have for years and still do. My buying habits haven't changed during this shooter induced shortage because I've not needed to restock anything but rimfire ammo and that mostly because the grand kids have dug deep into my supply and I've not been able to reorder to bring it back up to what is for me normal until I put this ammo on back order some while back. Luckily one of the dealers I use was willing to back order it for me while the others I use weren't taking back orders.

Was in my local gun store last week and discovered that they still had most calibers in stock but with limited supplies. Two or three boxes of many were all they had with the exception of shotgun ammo and some oddball high powered rifle ammo. All .22 ammo was at least .10 cents apiece and the most bulk .22s they had were boxes of 375 selling for $37.50. Saturday I was in Walmart and they were almost out of ammo. The dept. head said they had outstanding orders and received some ammo every day but only in small quanities. He said that he has several customers that are in daily and wait until the supplies are unpacked and buy all that they can get. As with my LGS, Walmart did have a lot of shotgun ammo.

In the 80's I bought some 9mm from WW2 about 1 in 3 fired .

About the old ammo, a lot depends on how it's stored. I've had 20+ year old ammo that worked perfectly and ammo only a couple of years old have 20% duds.

Keep it in the house in a reasonably stable human-habitable temperature and humidity range and it will last a long time.

Problem is that buying a few bricks for a rainy day doesn't go that far. I've been in the habit of buying two CASEs of 22LR per year. Not lately, but I'd go through a brick every week or two.
