I think a few of you guys missed my point.
Everytime I buy 22lr, I buy two boxes.
Store one shoot one. When the one I was shooting ran out I'd buy two more. And repeat the process. Over the years I've gotten enough that these occassional blips in availabilty don't effect me.

Plus I'd buy extra occasssionally. It wasn't like bulk packs were ubber expensive.
I never thought sitting around hoping some retailer would have my back on this was wise.

That would be like me buying two candy bars with the intention of eating one and storing the other. I don't think it would work as planned.

But it is a good idea in principle. My approach is to buy thousands at a time, when I know only hundreds are needed within the next six months, for example.

I usually keep more 22s, powder, primers, and bullets than I need. I like to keep about 2 years worth on hand. Primers are the things I have most often almost run out of, and I think I've got myself trained finally to take a longer view of things. I also have loads worked up to use the major primer models, so if one is not available, I can fall back on another.

Small comfort today, though. We've had a rough ride, from the sky high prices on lead shot a few years ago, to the situation for cartridge components since the Bush/Obama wars started.

I don't remember who it was, but about a year ago someone on this very forum said there was gonna be a shortage of primers. I doubt this was what he was refering do, but the point of it was that I went and checked my supply. Ordered up and I'm good to go. I think considering how it's going, anytime it seems like things have settled down and normalized is the time to stock up.

I've said this very thing since the first primer shortage I can remember in either the late 80s or early 90s. Too often people misinterpret the term long term as meaning next week, month or year rather than meaning lifetime. Any way you look at it, I think I'm covered and I'm just trying to help out the kids and grandkids.

BTW I have no sympathy for most who find themselves short.

I did give a buddy a bulk pack 22lr recently.
His G'kids got 22's for Christmas and were wanting to shoot.
He doesn't shoot a 22 and didn't have ammo.
Couldn't sit there and let that happen.
But I can't afford to help them out evey week either.

Well there are exceptions to everything.

I have 4 grandkids and of the 4 the 7 year old young lady who is here locally has not just taken interest but done so with a passion. 22s are the main agenda right now but she has quickly adapted to the ARs and some others. As long as I can keep her interests diversified we will be fine and I see no problem making that happen. Besides, her daddy listened to the old man and has a fine stock of his own. I never mind helping out as long as folks pay attention but too many folks just wade blindly into the darkness and then think they have the right to whine when they're not served as they feel they should be.

Some of us don't have the luxury of being able to layout $160 or more for a case of .22s in one shot. I can only muster enough cash to buy a couple of bricks at a time from time to time.

For me it wasn't a luxury as much as a choice. I understand that may only work for me. Everyone has to make thier own decision on how they spend and plan. But it was only costing me around $35 every payday or every other payday. I even have some bulk pack that were quite a bit cheaper than that.

No, I think you missed the point that "buy two and save one" only works so long as you can still buy ammo. Once ammo is no longer available you can only deplete your existing supply with no way to replace it. It's like saying "you should have planned for this years ago", that advise is no help to those who are in the weeds today.
And I do agree that it is the panic buying and hoarding which are the problem. Ammo and componetns are still being made as fast as the manufacturers can produce it and ship it out, there is no shortage at the factory level, it is only short because people are following the advise to "stock up" as best they can. If people only bought ammo as they need it there would still be ammo on the shelf the next time they need it. It's like a buffalo migration, you can either run at the head of the thundering herd or be left to pick over the trampled ground.

By refusing to stock your stores when you could you put yourself in jeopardy of running out. When you can't replenish you want to blame someone else for the shortage when It's actually nobodies fault but your own that you're out. Kinda sounds like todays government policies. Punish those who plan ahead.

Most find themselves "in the weeds" due to their own transgressions.

On demand inventory .
Just in time inventory .
both caused the shortages . We all liked the lower prices and both of those kept the cost of storage low . BUT it also caused the shortages.

Not exactly. When my main supplier had skid after skid of ammo in his storage facility prices were low. As inventory got smaller and smaller, prices got higher and higher since he had to look ahead at the rising costs of replacement stock. Now there is no stock to replace it with. His stock comes direct from the manufacturer and they aren't shipping. There is a demand alright but until things calm down a bit there will be only limited shipments. It seems the manufacturers are trying to avoid inflated retail prices themselves since the general public doesn't know how.

You and I are both correct as different shops do it different ways . A store in Va. Beach sat on tons of ammo the last time and had good prices through the crisis. But some big chains with bean counters can't tie up capital . Walmart is a good example there warehouse is not for storage as much as reciving product on one side and splitting it up as it moves through to be loaded on the other side. 2/3's of their inventory is on trucks

. I would think Walmart would have more effect on the market than a single shop in an area.

No sir, it is not about "planning ahead". The example given by Old Fart of stocking up a little at a time over years is an example of planning ahead. The people who run to the store and buy them out once a shortage is looming are an example of being greedy and self serving. The shortage is entirely 100% the fault of the horders who take the attitude of "me first and to hell with everyone else". If you are proud of that attitude you really should not be.

Got news for ya Joe. I haven't bought any ammo in over 5 years. I have picked up some loading components at a good price in the last few years. It's the on demand whiners that are the problem. And yes! I'm more than proud of my attitude that allows me and mine to plan ahead and very disappointed in people who don't. Those who don't are the problem. We all come into this world with the same opportunities and those who choose to not accept the challenge always blame those who do for their problems.

Thats one of the things I like about owning the Encore system. I have several barrels and am not tied to one cartridge when it comes to finding ammo (I reload anyway so it's moot). I notice or local hardware store that generally only carries "standard" cartridges has a case of 7.62 x 54R. Some shooter out there might get lucky.......
