22 Jet barrel
« on: January 25, 2013, 04:02:56 AM »
First off, if I was bidding against any of you guys on gun broker this week for this barrel, I am sorry (the last person's handle on GB started with T and ended with N so hope it wasnt quick)  :) .  Now for the questions.  I have brass and bullets coming so that step is cleared.  Anyone else played with the jet and have some good loads?  I am still looking for dies.  Will probably order some from grafs this week if I can't find used.

Frames...  So these were on model 158s I believe.  I would like to put it back on a 158 frame but are there other options?  I know sb2, but would like to get it on an original if possible.  Will I have firing pin size issues?  Any help would be appreciated.
Handis: .17 mach2 (x2), .22 lr, 22 hornet, .22 jet, .223, .243, .270, .280, .357 max (x2), 35 remington, 35 whelen, 45-70, 445sm, 30-30, 410, 500 S&W, 50 AK

Not me, I bid on an ebay Jet barrel years ago, when it went over $200 I bowed out. I had even bought a set of Jet dies just in case I won! Sold the dies to mt3030 here before he passed.

The H&R Jet was offered in the M158, stick with thicker cup SR primers and you shouldn't have any problems with larger firing pins.  ;)

send a messege to Stimpylu.  methinks he might have had some "jet experience" in the Handi.

Not trying to hijack... just ask a question about a Jet.
My local shop has a complete original Jet with dies, brass, bullets for $395. The rifle is in good shape and the bore is perfect.
What do you guys think of the price??   Too high??  Good price??

Thanks Couger.  I found where he was making brass from 357 wayback when.  I am hoping he runs across this post but if not I will PM him.

Thanks Tim, If you bowed out at 200 years ago I am happy with my purchase price.  Was hoping it wasn't you this time.

Good question Spanky.  Wondered that too as I was bidding on this one.  I had never seen a whole rifle but have only been afflicted for a little over a year.  Have no idea if that is a good price or not.  Do you know if it is all matching or peiced together.  I know a bunch of the jet barrels came as part of a package deal.

The rifle is all original. The stocks, recoil pad (red diamond), open sights, etc... is as it left the factory.

I would go in with 3 bills and lay them out and see if they bite. If they do, I would walk out a happy man.  That said, depending on number of brass, bullets and condition of dies, I myself would probably jump on it especially if you could get them to 350.  Just me though, everyone else might think I am crazy.

This was from a few months ago.  It looks like this guy got a steal.  $395 would be a little high for me, but I'd only be in the market for a 22 jet if I could get a deal like this guy did.  Really, how many will you ever find in that condition again?

This is some info I got from frogfoot. "I use the 14 grains of ww680 with a .223 jacketed 45 grain bullet. This load in my 22 inch barrel has worked well for me.
(low was 2808 fps, high was 2865 on a ten shot string.) These were with a cci small rifle mag primer. I have loaded this higher,
but it went all over the paper, and I started to see some excess presure signs so i pulled back to where I got the best group.

I also use 11.1 grains of 4759 under a lyman 225415 cast bullet, but I have not checked the velocity on my alpha chronograph.
I am working a load using imr 4198 with a 40 grain jacketed bullet over 13.3 grains of this powder. It seems to shoot well, but the velocity is
not what I wanted as a 5 shot string averaged about 2400 fps.

This little round is still a work in progress, as I have had years of interuption with overseas deployments etc.

These shoot safely in my model 490 topper junior, but always start low and work your way up.

send a messege to Stimpylu.  methinks he might have had some "jet experience" in the Handi.

Ya , just a tad , as mine is a re-chamber and not a factory barrel the data may be off just a touch . Most of the load work-up was done with the 40g jacketed " Hornet " bullets in .223 so some of that data may cross over to the factory barrels , I've also had good luck with the Hornady 35 & 40 grain V-max bullets as well as the 37 grain Calhoon's .

Just about any bullet that works well in the Hornet will shoot well in the Jet and as far as powders go , you will want to work with either IMR4227 , Unique or 2400 , these did a great job , you may want to avoid Lilgun , it was giving me way too much SD in the test loads with pressure spikes too ( BAD primer issues ) .

Just remember the Jet was never intended to be a " Hotrod " so don't try to push it too hard , basicly its a reloadable 22 Mag with some extra zip .  ;)

Spanky, If ya go in and lay 300 on the counter and he doesn't take it.  Are ya gonna be happy a month from now when someone else has the rifle, dies, brass and bullets and you still have your 395?  I'm at a point where if I want something I get it.  I've got "X" amount of time to enjoy it, and I can't take the money with me when I go.

Well said Pete.  I have passed on two guns the last few weeks that I had been looking for over a year.  Both were reasonable and I had the money in my pocket.  I am still kicking myself.  Make an off Spanky, worst they can say is "no" then buy the darn thing if it makes you happy and you can swing it.

You can prolly find other vintage frames with accessory barrels like the M058 which was issued with Hornet barrels, but the M158 is the only factory Jet offering listed in the BBGV.

I know, right?  I am going to put a few rounds through it today w/o the forearm.  I have a sb2 that it mounts up nice and tight.  Thanks again for the shipment Tony.

While not exactly a Rem Jet, but I have seen the 357 Maximum case necked down to 22 cal. Take a hornet barrel, rechamber it and get even more velocity from the Max case.

Thanks, Dinny

I just saw another 22RJ barrel on eBay. Given they have a clamp-on for end stud, could it be removed and have a modern stud installed for fitting to a newer frame?

Thanks, Dinny

Re: 22 Jet barrel
« Reply #26 on: February 10, 2013, 04:22:38 PM »
I just saw another 22RJ barrel on eBay. Given they have a clamp-on for end stud, could it be removed and have a modern stud installed for fitting to a newer frame?

Thanks, Dinny
I saw that one too am watching it to see if I paid too much for mine :)  I have been looking for the plate for the snap on forearm from all the parts places but have struck out.  I guess I am going to have to start hunting for an old 158 shotgun or combo w/ a snap on.  I shot mine today sans forearm and it has promise.
