My .30-06 Encore
« on: January 27, 2013, 08:34:50 AM »
I bought an Encore awhile back with a .375H&H barrel and a Simmons scope on it for a reasonable price.  I just wanted the frame and the stock for a 209X50 muzzleloader.  I sold the Simmons scope and the .375H&H barrel put a muzzleloader barrel on it and it shot great.  The thing is I hardly ever shot it except right before muzzleloading season just to ensure it was still zeroed.  Recently I ran across an unfired .30-06 barrel for a very reasonable price and I thought since I was downsizing my collection it would make a good backup for my Model 700.  I wasn't expecting too much because of various things I'd read, but this gun shoots great.  This morning I shot several 3/4" groups at 100 yards using 180 grain Core-Lokt factory ammo.  Since my Model 700 loves this same ammo, it worked out good.  Now I just need to find a hand load that shoots as well.

I have the 26" fluted barrel. Using 180 gr. Speer hotcores with 56 gr IMR 4350 produces a tight group. Haven't chronoed this load yet but should be over 2750 fps. This was developed for elk. If I just wanted accuracy I'd slow er down and use a 165 - 168 gr. bullet.

I just can't get good groups with the lighter bullets.

I am glad yours shoots 180's well.

Hmmm, I have been thinking about getting a 30-06 tube for my Encore. If I thought I could get 1" groups with a good 180 gr. load I would do it.

My Encore has not been very good, but I have a Contender in Super 14 that shoots very well.

I bought my first s/s Prohunter last Oct it came with a 7mm mag barrel that I traded without firing it for a s/s Prohunter 30-06 barrel and I purchased a s/s Prohunter 375H&H barrel.

Had them both shortened to 22" cool part about this is both cartridges are over 100 years old.

My son shot 2 coastal blacktail bucks with the 30-06 barrel first one the day I got the barrel back from the gunsmith the second appr 1 month later.

As far as I am concerned the 30-06 is one of the best all round cartridges available.

I was starting to think that it would be cool to also buy a 22-250 or 243 barrel for predator hunting but with reading the comments on shooting the lighter bullets so accurately above I'm thinking I will give loading light bullets in the 30-06 before I look at buying another barrel.

This would kind of puts me full circle 30 + years ago before I could afford to have a predator dedicated rifle I started loading light bullets 110gr Sierra HP's in my Ruger M77 tang safety 30-06 for coyotes.

Definitely going to give it a try again I think I may have some 110gr V-Max and what is left of the last box of Sierra 110gr HP's on the shelf.

Great set up.....an Encore with a .30-06 barrel......
This works for me also - 4350 and either a 165 or a 180....same powder drop for both:
