45-70 on SB1

How warm can yo go?  i am shooting 35 gr of imr4198 on the 325 ftx bullet but would like to go up to 40 or even 45.  The barrel locks up solid on my sb1 but I have to add two layers of tin foil to the hinge pin to get it to lock up tight on my sb2.  i looked the faq's over could not find a definative answer.  Maybe there is not a definative answer but I thought I would see what you all say.

This is just me.  It hasn't much to do with what other folks do.  First, I'd put it on another SB2 frame.  I always keep extras.  If that didn't work, I'd replace the foil with a piece of stainless feeler gauge the same thickness and go from there.  All my center fires are on SB2 frames, including the pistol calibers.  No primer issues, no worry about hotter loads, etc.  We're only talking about a 50 buck difference between a SB1 and a SB2.......is the SB1 worth the headaches?

There are basically 3 levels of 45-70 loads:
Trapdoor Springfield and other 'weak' actions
Marlin Leverguns
Ruger No.1
With your SB-1 please stick to the first level.
The value of a 45-70 in the real world is that the large dia. and high inertia, though relatively slow moving projectile goes through about anything, and any bullet energy out the other side of the critter is 'wasted', but those two holes let out a lot of wind and vital fluids.

I wouldn't go any higher than 28K PSI/CUP - that would be absolute tops.  So basically - trapdoor levels.

And even that that you may have pierced or flowed primers from an oversized shotgun firing pin.

Stick with trapdoor loads. If you need more power than that then get an SB2 frame that fits it.

there is no animal on the North American Continent that cannot be killed, humanely and efficiently with a 400-500gr bullet lumbering along at 1200-1300 fps

penetration is measured in feet!

stick with trap door loads to be safe or use trail boss powder, or better yet get a sb2 receiver. 8)

My concern would be if someone else loaded something other than a trapdoor load.
