.45 Colt XTP loads
« on: January 28, 2013, 05:26:09 AM »
Hi All,

I'm looking for some accurate, general purpose 250 gr XTP loads for my Ruger BH. I have Unique, Universal, HP-38, HS-6, and 2400. Any thoughts on some mild - mid range loads within those parameters?

Thanks in advance!

I'm in on this discussion, too .... I was given a pount of HS-6 and, while I mainly use W231, WSF and 2400 for .44 mag, I'd LIKE to find a use for all of this HS6 I have!!

You ask for " accurate , and general " loads.  Not sure what pressure range your looking for.   I've found in my 5.5 Bisley , a 250 XTP over 10 grains of power pistol is an absolute tack driver.   Also the old standby...Unique ...I use 10 grains under my 255 gr cast.  ( Oregon Trail ) Both of those loads are +P loads. Believe they're both in the 1000-1100 FPS range.   I did use 18 grains of 2400 with the 250 XTP , it didn't fair nearly as well , though it was a much hotter load.  I did a lot of testing with the 250 XTP and the cast 255 with several different powder combinations.  If ya want , I can PM more exact info along with chrony results.  But all were +P loads , nothing brain jarring , but in the Ruger only catagory.

I too would recommend that 250 gr XTP over 10 gr of Unique. It would kick butt without being too bad on recoil. I run the same load under my 255 and 272 gr cast bullets. Recoil is easy, they're accurate and will hammer anything in my part of the world.

Kevin:  I believe that 8-10 gns of Unique under the XTPs or and decent 255 gn swc will be fun shooting and accurate.  10 gns under that 250 would whack a whitetail to 50 yd; I think 14-16 gn of 2400 is also worth trying.

If it's a full size Blackhawk, 13gr of HS6 is a good load. Linebaugh list it on his "dissolving the myth" (if you google "linebaugh" and that title you'll find it) writing. He list it for a 260 Cast load but it should give you 1050-1100 fps in the XTP.

+1
I use 12.5 of HS6 behind a 255 hard cast or 250 XTP and get right at 1040 from a 5.5" Blackhawk.

I was playing with various bullet weights in .45 Colt and .45 ACP, both shot through a 4-5/8" Blackhawk. Interestingly, the lightest bullet was the most accurate in ACP, and the heaviest was most accurate in .45 Colt.

The 250 XTP was loaded over 9.9 gr of Win 231. Average velocity was 1001 fps.

These were all shot at 25 yds. and the circles are 4" diameter.
