Savage Edge? Update: I bought it
« on: January 28, 2013, 02:36:22 PM »
Anyone famiiar with this gun, especially in .223?

Was at the local Wally World and saw one in the rack but of course the staff there can't give ya any information. ::) Price was right though, under 300.00. I'm thinking about acquiring a varmint gun and this one might fill the bill if it's any good.

Questions: rifling twist rate in the .223?
Trigger is reported to be middlin' poor, hard to work on?

Savage usually uses the 1in9 twist rate for rifling in their .223's
I have the model 11 in .223 and its great.

Well.....I went ahead and bought it.

First impression, without having fired it: It "feels" really good when brought to the shoulder! Trigger pull is not bad at all, MAYBE 3.5 pounds. ??? (not at all what I was expecting after reading a couple of reviews on the web) No creep and no gritty feel at all! :) Barrel appears to be free floating, no contact with the stock.

It's going to have to wait for a scope and ammo to become available, and I gotta order a set of dies for it, powder, and bullets for reloading.

All in all, I think I will be very happy it!

Opinions and/or suggestions still welcomed......

Well, I managed to acquire a set of Redding 5.56 dies. Figure I will only be neck sizing my reloads anyway so the 5.56 set should work.........and the price was right! (got them from a friend who no longer shoots anything in that caliber)

You should be happy with it--I feel mine is great. I put a Barska 6x24 scope on mine. My brother in law liked the scope so much he bought 2 of them, and one of his sons bought one as well. My nephew has a savage edge in .223--he likes it real well, but then I haven't gone shooting with him when he had it with him to get a opinion of it myself. It should be as good as my model 11, maybe even better with the accu triger.

The Edge has been renamed the Axis...same gun.  I bought a .223 this past year, and it is as accurate as any gun I've ever owned.  I did slick the trigger up just a bit, but it wasn't terrible as it was.   For the money, it's hard to beat.

Savage had to rename the Edge because another Co. allready uses this name for their product. It is the Axis now.

Well, the one I just purchased was advertized as the Edge, the paper work says "Edge", and I think it is marked "Edge" on the barrel (I'm at work right now and can't check that part). So I'm guessing that this one has been in stock for a long time.
Hey!!! Collectable someday!?!?!?!? :o ;)

I've been told that, due to the twist rate Savage uses, my Stevens .223 should shoot heavier bullets better.  But I regularly get .5 moa or better with Fiocchi 40gr ballistic tips.  This past weekend I got lucky...

Nice groups and a great choice in rifle!  I picked up an Axis in .308 at wally world for $256.00 plus tax. Aside from some difficulty scoping it(most mounts only work with LONG scopes). I LOVE IT.

An absolute bargain. Very accurate, slick yet tight bolt and as mentioned above, the trigger is better than i'd have ever believed. Like the lightweight stock and the feel and balance. Only complaint is the plastic safety, works fine but i'd have paid 20 bucks more for a metal one definitely. Am very glad I chose this rifle over any of the rest near it in price.  J

Yep, you need a long scope or buy an offset ring which I did.

I'm plotting out its "forever" scope now, had a surrogate scope on there through this last deer season but its time to get the right scope for this rifle. Wanting to keep the whole rig made in the U.S.A., I went with a redfield revolution 2x7x33?,  a sweet scope but it was too short. I''m kicking around the 3x9x40 version, or a cheap leupold.   J

If you like the Redfield it can probably be fitted by using two offset rings.

I bought an Edge .223 after deer season last year and absolutely LOVE it!
Mine shot great right out of the box, but did a bit of trigger work to make it even better. Check out You tube.
This year I loaded a .55 grain Sierra HP and dropped an 8 point buck in his tracks.
Love the rifle!

I have been working on this Axis that in 223 for about 2 weeks. First thing I did was to reinforced the forearm and the wrist with steel rods and then I bedded the action. I filled the barrel channel with epoxy and shot to give rifle some weight. I also filled the stock with Great Stuff. I replaced the trigger spring and now the trigger pull 2.5 pound. And painted the stock with Krylon Fusion blue. And green rifle is  Stevens 200 in 308 this rifle was done about 5 years ago. I did all the same tricks to that rifle also. Today I went shooting the Axis with some my reloads. The target was at 100 yards. Please over look my loading bench
