W296 over 360 Cast Performance
« on: February 16, 2004, 10:06:59 AM »
Does 25 gr. of W296 over a 360 gr. Cast Performance bullet sound like it is too much or is that about right?

Just in a hurry on my lunch break...

Guess some additional info would help.  It is for a Taurus Raging Bull .454 8" barrel.

Using Starline brass with CCI 400 primers.

Thanks

I use 30gr. of WW296 "under" a 340 gr. hard cast WFP without a gas check in my 6" RB. I get an average of 1534 fps with execellent accuracy (for me any way). I only use 30gr because it grouped better than the other loads I tried. I've heard of some folks putting more powder but my Starline cases will buldge at 31gr. For my money my load shoots good but is over powered fo any critter walking east TN hills, not to mention my hand. Plenty tough hombres can run through 50 rounds of ammo loaded up to Freedom Arms specs and not whine. I'm to old to take that abuse much longer. If your RB will group good with 25 gr, I'd say good for you and enjoy your shooting. I put a red dot on mine and love it. Looking back I wish I'd never bought the RB in .454. Honestly it's more handgun than I need. I use a Ruger SBH with 21.5gr of WW296 pushing a 290gr WFP @ 1340 fps that will kill any SUV that might attack me. Sheesh....all the $ I have in the RB, red dot, reloading componets and reloading equiptment I could have spent on nice leather for my carry guns, fine cigars or a doxen other details I'd like to have.

I use 28 gr of 296 or H110 under the 360 gr Cast Performance Bullet with CCI 450 primers and starline brass with great results in my Ruger super redhawk 7.5 and 1502 fps velocity. It is very accurate and dispatched a water buffalo with one shot and complete penetration as well as several deer and hogs. I have never recovered a bullet yet.

fennell :-)  :D
