H & R Topper 158 30-30 from 1970

Friands:

One last bit of advice / information needed.

I plan in mounting a Sightron 4 x 32 scope on this rifle. Should I use low or medium rings to avoid having the hammer from hitting the scope? base will be a Weaver 60A. I also plan on mounting a hammer extension on the left side if advisable.

Thanks!  Grandpa Crusty

Your vintage H&R has a low hammer spur unless it's been replaced, no hammer spur extension will likely be needed, in fact a modern H&R/Uncle Mike's extension can interfere with the barrel release if not mounted correctly. I use low rings with the low hammer spur usually, but it depends on the scope.

Grandpa, you need to also remember not all ring height is the same from brand to brand of rings.  With my prefered 'Weaver Quad-loc' rings, I must use one marked 'high' to get a 'medium' height.  The Weaver's marked 'High' will just clear the hammer on a scope with a small ocular bell.  With a bigger bell, I must use the Weaver rings marked 'extra high'.  So you should take into account what brand of rings you are using also.  Enjoy that 158 30-30, mine is my favorite Handi! (and it shoots will under an inch!)  :) 44 Man

My local WalMart has a good selection of rings/heights, plus a liberal return policy (I always open packages carefully to be able to repack for return if necessary).
On a low comb stock, with my neck and cheekbone, I like as low a scope as possible to just clear the hammer.
IMHO, Dont err on the notion of the demon 'see thru' mounts.

Friends:

I ordered the Weaver 60A mount and Millett "low" weaver style 1" rings as I like the scope as low as possible - hope it works with my Sightron 4 x 32 scope?

Would never, never use "see thru" rings!

That should be fine specially with a fixed power scope, ya got no power ring to deal with, Millett low weaver style are some of the lowest "lows" available, I think they're real close to Weaver lows, the only weaver style ring lower that I've use are Burris Zee extra lows which were discontinued.  :-\

I have a 4x Prodiamond on mine and can/will switch to low rings when I get some.  Maybe even go to a 20mm objective scope to get it lowest.  You got a good shooter.  I like mine.  It's very light and 'Handi'.

I mounted a 2.5x20 scope on one of my 45/70's, using extension rings so the Ocular Eye Piece is just ahead of the hammer.  Gives me lots of room to load/unload without having to reach under the scope.
