Re-barreling a Colt Python
« on: February 16, 2004, 11:28:51 AM »
I would like to resolve the issues regarding barrel configurations for the Python.  I have a Python in s/n range of 94,xxx with standard 6" bbl.  The barrel has light internal galling, the result of removing a stuck jacketed bullet.  I understand that at some point in Python production changes were made to the configuration of Python barrels which include the front sight pins and possibly the barrel threads.  The barrel on my pistol utilizes two pins to retain the front sight.  Apparently, later production pistols utilized only a single pin for sight retention.  As to barrel threads I am aware of only rumors which suggest a change at some point.  No one I've discussed this with has offered anything concrete or certain.  This past weekend at a gunshow I found a new unused six inch barrel available for $85.00 (seems reasonable) but it was of the later type with single pin front sight retention and for that reason I passed on buying it.  If anyone has the true scoop on this subject I would be interested in knowing.
