Looking at the FAQs at re chamber options for the .223... the .225 win is not listed? so this would not work? darn.. did not really want to go up to .220 swift or .22-250. having problems with .223 barrel and am contemplating just re chambering the @#$%& thing!

225 Win should be, I've emailed Fred twice about it, he has never updated his list, his list also indicates several magnum chamberings which aren't suitable for the Handi or a Contender, but are for the Encore, he should mention that too.  :-\ Dozens of members have rechamered their 223 Handis to 225 Win.

Out of curiosity, whats the trouble with the .223?
I hate when i miss. But when I do, I can always come up with a reason why.

IIRC there was something like the 219 Zipper Improved that was a fine performer and had much better throat/barrel life than the cases that held more powder.

I looked at the zipper, but don't want to get into annealing cases to form.  the .225win brass is available sometimes.

Problems with the .223- first box of ammo mis fire ALOT. no good

tried different ammo went bang with the first try but stuck the cases in the barrel pretty good. had to tap out with a rod. the ejector still stuck. had to dis assemble and pop the ejector loose with a screwdriver against the roll pin. cleaned and lubed and will try again with yet another ammo. polishing the chamber was also recomended.

Read the FAQs on ejector to ectractor conversion.. im not sure about those.. is there a conversion that uses all the factory extractor parts? instead of the ejector parts?

I was thinking about the .224 Weatherby, Performance is about same as 22-250
but way cooler case.
its belted but it is based on the 240W case and not the fullsize mag case
Norma makes fine brass for it
but now i dont have a handi anymore

The ejector to factory extractor conversion is in the FAQs, the underlug has to be machined to accept the extractor cam.

The thing is that if the cases are sticking that bad then by changing from ejector to extractor you still are not fixing the real problem.

Have you considered sending it in for repair?  Even if it's not under warranty, odds are the repair won't cost much?

gcrank1 and tony, not knowing the exact problem i do want to figure it out. i don't want to send it in to have them return it saying "ok it's fixed" without any idea of what they did. I won't learn anything that way.

Inquiring minds WANT to know!: Lets start with what kind of ammo you have tried and had issues with.

I shot 8 rounds of cheap american eagle .223 ammo with every round miss firing. got advice here to try different ammo. took pmc .223 and winchester white box .223 to the range the next time. the pmc and win fired easily on the first trys, but failed to eject also sticking the ejector. the cases were tapped out by a cleaning rod and the gun closed and re-opened. the ejector was still stuck. pulled the barrel. used a small screw driver to pry on the rollpin very gently and "pop" the ejector springs out. re asmembled everthing works as it should. fired another round, stuck again same process. brought the gun home pulled barrel and cleaned ejector mech very well with solvent wd40 and compressed air. it is clean. did not pull it apart yet. What do you guys suggest next?

Do the ejector tune in the FAQs, that and the chamber polish usually cure sticking brass, if the ejector won't eject on an empty chamber, it needs some work, possibly a new spring if the addition of the BB in the ejector tune doesn't help.  ;)

I can convert it to a modified factory style extractor if you wish, I've done dozens of em.

Tim, sir that is a very gracious offer! I read the FAQs a few times and yet once again. am i correct you have to cut the slot with the grinding wheels even on a factory ejector barrel? i really would like to convert this to factory parts extractor hopefully without too much machine work. so far some of my attempts at do it myself work have gone ok, some not. (ruined two hammers so far trying to modify for hammer extension)

Yes, you have to open the slot farther forward in the underlug because it's in the wrong spot for the extractor cam. You could do it with the grinding disks or maybe even with a dremel if you don't have a drill press, I did a few in the drill press, but have done lots in the mini-mill, much easier to do.

The original mill is a vice and human powered file.
A HD drill press can do light duty milling IF set up properly, but hole drilling and a file to lengthen/square up the slot, etc. works too. Becoming familiar with the machine tool procedures can inspire some home shop creativity.
The local library will have machine shop books available.
A local Vo-Tech school may have machine shop courses, and thus the tools, available to you as may a local high school shop if you 'know the right people'.

Can't re-chamber a 223 to a Zipper.  The shoulder won't quite clean up.  I did the 225 Win and it worked very well.  Sixty grain Nosler Partition at just over 3200 fps works for me.
